- TS059-110 Castle - motte
Description
In gently undulating pasture on top of a natural gravel mound. The remains of a motte are defined by a steep scarp (Wth 4m; H 3m) from W-SE, with most of the S and central area (dims. c. 32m N-S; c. 30m E-W) quarried. There is a disturbed, uneven area in the NW sector, a plateau area (c. 26m NW-SE; 18m NE-SW) in the NE sector and short section of bank (Wth 8m; H 1.5m) at the SE. The mound not depicted on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map but is depicted on the later (1904) ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval mound (dims. c. 52m N-S; c. 35m E-W) with a quarry immediately to the S, with a trackway leading to the quarry. According to Flynn (1913, 13), who published a plan and section of the monument, the range of gravel hills NW-N-NE of Tipperary town terminate 'in the little hill of Garranacanty whose extremity is defended at the summit by a well defined fosse and rampart, whilst the summit itself affords evidences of attempts to construct a mound or enclosure'. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS059-111 Enclosure
Description
In improved pasture, at base of a gentle N-facing slope. Circular area (dims. 15m E-W; 14m N-S) defined by denuded scarp (Wth 2.5m; H 1.2m) and a well preserved external fosse (Wth 6.35m; D 0.45m). There is a causewayed entrance (Wth 2.5m) at W. The interior, which is dish-shaped, is obscured by a dense clump of briars in the NW quadrant and there are mature thorn trees growing around the perimeter. A motte (TS059-110----) is c. 220m to the WSW. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS059-132 Well
Description
A well is mentioned in a description of 'The United Parishes of Tamplenoe and Duneigore' in the Civil Survey 1654-56 as being 'by the sd brooke running betwixt the halfe colpe of Ballyhosty in this parish and the sixth pt colpe of Garrankanty afforesd to a well called Tobburkissane on pt of the lands of Garrankanty afforesd and from that well to a hill called Knockiteane along by a ditch meareing the same & this parish' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 41). On the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map there is a well at the NW of Garranacanty townland, on the border with Friarsfield and Drumclieve townlands which may be this well. It is not depicted on the subsequent (1904) edition. The OSi Ortho aerial photograph (2005) indicates that the area of well has been planted with forestry. - TS067-007 Enclosure
Description
On low hillock, in undulating pasture. Circular enclosure (dims. c. 21m N-S; inaccessible E-W) defined by scarp (Wth c. 7m; H c. 3-3.5m) and external fosse (Wth 3-4m; D 0.3-0.5m) both visible at N and S and obscured by vegetation E and W. Interior largely impenetrable, but appears to slope downwards to W. Earthen field boundaries radiate from NE and E. Electricity pylon close to SW. Description
In pasture, on generally level area of gentle W-facing slope. Monument identified on aerial photograph (CUCAP 13 July 1966, APA 19; CUCAP 7 Oct. 1969, AYO 43). Sub-rectangular area defined by low bank (Wth 9m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.7m) on S (L 51m) and W (L 46m) sides and scarp on N (L 45m; Wth 8.5m; H 0.65m) and E (L 57m). External fosse (Wth 14m; D 0.8m) is distinctive to S, shallow and wide (Wth 14m; D 0.35m) to N and generally low in profile to E and W. Interior generally level and clear of vegetation. Possible annexe of monument to N, but truncated by field boundary and nothing visible in field to S. Possible annexe adjoining to W defined by edge of low profile fosse along this side and very low profile traces of scarp to S and W. Description
In pasture, on gentle W-facing slope. Earthworks identified on aerial photograph in July 1966 (CUCAP APA 19; CUCAP 7 Oct. 1969, AYO 43). Various slight undulations exist in field to W and N of possible annexe adjoining moated site (TS067-009001-) and it is possible that these are associated with some form of leat system. A linear feature extends (L c. 70m; long-axis N-S) to S from NE corner of moated site (TS067-009001-) and flanking E side of moated site (TS067-009003-). A linear depression (long-axis WSW-ENE) extends (L c. 45m; D c. 0.05m) to ENE from near NE corner of moated site (TS067-009003-). A second linear depression is parallel to WNW of latter.
