• TS066-037 Enclosure
  Description

  In low-lying level wet pasture with a ring-barrow (TS066-035----) and a ditch-barrow (TS066-157----) located c. 250m to the NNW. The enclosure consists of a roughly circular area (original diam. 20m; now 28m N-S; 34m E-W) defined by a gently sloping earthen scarp (Wth 2.1m; H 0.2m) with a flat-bottomed external fosse (overall Wth 7m; Wth at base 5m; D 0.2m). From ESE to SW the fosse, scarp and a portion of the interior have been removed by the NE-SW orientated Cork-Dublin rail line. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth. A shallow SE-NW orientated relic field drain extends across the interior from the rail line at ESE, intersecting with the edge of the enclosure at NNW.   In improved pasture, on a low rise overlooking lower ground to N. Sub-rectangular area (dims. c. 32m NNW-SSE; 25m ENE-WSW) defined by a natural scarp (Wth 5.5m; H 0.9m; L 19m) to N and more gradual scarp (Wth 3.25m; H 0.3m) to E (L 38m) and W (L 24m). Water from pond abutting to S drains into fosse-like water channels on W, N and E-sides. Interior has a natural rise with ground falling on all sides. Shallow linear depression (long axis E-W) cuts across centre of interior. Remains of possible square enclosure off-centre to W. Identified as an enclosure on an aerial photograph (OS 2436/5).   Description

  In improved, low lying and gently undulating pasture. A semi-circular area (dims. 19m NNW-SSE; 8m ENE-WSW) defined by the remains of a levelled bank (Wth 5.0m; int. H 0.05m; ext. H 0.2m) NNW-N-E and a low bank (Wth 5.3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.25m) in the SE quadrant. The monument is truncated by a deep drain flanked by a field boundary running NNW-SSE to the WSW. The interior is slightly higher at the centre, falling gently to the drain at the WSW and falling slightly to the base of the bank at ENE. A shallow, linear drain runs WSW-ENE to immediate S.   Description

  In pasture, on a very gentle WSW-facing slope. Circular area (dims. 20m N-S; 22m E-W) defined by scarp (Wth 1.7m; H 1.0m). Entrance (Wth 2m) at SE and breach (Wth 1.2m) at ESE. Remains of fosse (basal Wth 1.25m; overall Wth 3.55m; D 0.1m) NE-NW. Fosse re-cut in recent years to create a wide pond concentric NW-N-NE with the ringfort. A circular area (dims. 3.75m N-S; 3.6m E-W) defined by a shallow fosse (Wth 1.35m; D 0.08m) from NE-S-W and traceable NW-N-NE where the fosse falls away down the external side of the enclosure.   Description

  In rough pasture, enclosed by approximately 8 year old forestry to the W and N. Identified on an aerial photograph (OS 2397/6 and 2348). A large oval area (dims. 21.5m N-S; 23m E-W), raised (H 0.95-1.05m) above the surrounding ground level and defined by a substantial bank (Wth 7.35m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.05m) and possible fosse (Wth 12.25; D 0.7m) NW-N-E. The bank is best preserved in the N quadrant and is reduced to scarp (Wth 5.3m; H 1.0m) NE-S-NW and is very gradual S-W-NW.   In rough, level pasture which though drained remains wet and badly poached by cattle. A ring-barrow (TS066-041001-) is located c. 4.5m to the WNW. A circular area (dims. 4.4m N-S; 4.9m E-W) defined by a fosse (Wth 2.0m; D 0.05m) which is levelled out yet traceable WNW-N-NE. A drain running ENE-WSW truncates the SSE sector of the fosse. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.1m) best defined ENE-S-NNE. Interior level and is same height as exterior ground level. Identified as a ring-ditch on an aerial photograph (OS 2350 (mono) 2436/5). • TS066-181 Standing stone
  Description

  In rough, level pasture to the SE of old farm buildings. Monument identified during ASI fieldwork. A standing stone (0.45m x 0.25m; H 1.65m), rectangular in plan and orientated ESE-WNW. It is tilting slightly to the SSW. The stone rises to a subtle point at the apex. There is a slight depression around the base at the SSW caused by cattle erosion. A sub-circular area (dims. 5m N-S; 4.2m E-W) defined by the remains of a shallow fosse (Wth 1.4m; D 0.05m) NE-S-NW. The monument has been levelled upslope across the N-sector. A circular area (dims. 4.75m N-S; 4.6m E-W) defined by a shallow fosse (Wth 1.2m; D 0.04m). The interior is level and the same height as the external ground level.   Description

  In rough pasture, overlooking a poorly drained area to the ESE. Identified during field survey by Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly (9 December 2008). Conjoined ditch barrows (TS066-184002- and TS066-184003-) are located c. 7m to the SE and a ditch barrow (TS066-183002-) is located c. 52m to the ENE. A circular area (dims. 3.15m N-S; 3.3m E-W) defined by a shallow fosse (Wth 1.6m; D 0.03m), accentuated by wild irises in the S quadrant, with the remains of a possible outer bank (Wth 2.95m; int. H 0.14m; ext. H 0.04m) W-S-SE. The interior is 0.07m lower in height than the external ground level. A circular area (dims. 4m N-S; 3.5m E-W) defined by a shallow fosse (Wth 1.9m; D 0.11m) accentuated by wild irises and waterlogged in the S quadrant. The interior has a low dome-shaped profile. • TS066-199 Barrow - ditch barrow
  Description

  In wet terrain, on a gentle S-facing slope, in pasture. There are three ditch barrows (TS066-182001-; TS066-182002-; TS066-182003-) lying c. 107m, 112m and 137m to the NE respectively, a ring-barrow (TS066-073----) and a ditch barrow (TS066-073----) lying c. 247m and 220m to the ESE respectively and a ring-barrow (TS066-074----) lying c. 278m to the SE. Monument identified on Google Earth aerial imagery (Imagery Date: 2/20/2009) as a circular ring-ditch, c. 6m in diameter. It is likely that this is a ditch barrow given its proximity to other barrows. There are a lot of drainage channels in this field. There is no visible trace of the monument above ground.   In reclaimed low-lying pasture.
