- TS059-081001 Castle - unclassified
Description
In gently undulating pasture, on a low rise. 'Grennon' castle is one of four castles mentioned in 1569 in a dispute between the Earl of Desmond and the Earl of Ormond (Butler 1914, 11). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) 'On the s[ai]d lands stands a castle Garrisoned and thirtie thatcht houses & cabins. The s[ai]d castle & lands of Grenane is a mannor with the Royalties of a court leete & barron' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 42). The proprietor of 'The Castle & Towne of Grenane & Ballyhosty' in 1640 is given as the Countess of Ormond and the tenant was 'Sr Hardres Waller Tennt. by mortgage & long lease yett unexpird' (ibid.). There is no visible trace of the castle above ground. It stood within an oblong area (dims. 52m N-S; 39m E-W), currently defined by a timber fence from W-E and by a linear stone field wall (long axis E-W) along the S. Within this enclosure there is a sub-oval, sunken area (dims. 36m E-W; 26m N-S) which is defined by a bank (overall Wth 6.6m; Wth at top 2.2m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.7m) to the S and by scarp (Wth 2.2m; H 0.2m) to the N, E and W. The area within has low humps and hollows although no discernible feature is evident due to the high and dense growth of vegetation. A higher area of ground is noted within the NW quadrant. - TS059-081002 Earthwork
Description
In gently undulating pasture, on a low rise. This has been classified as a 'Motte' in the SMR (1992) and RMP (1997). There is no motte visible at ground level. The castle (TS059-081001-) is depicted as being enclosed by a circular earthwork on the 1st (1840) ed. 6-inch OS map and by an earthen bank on the 2nd (1904) ed. This has been interpreted as a motte (Barry 1977, 149) but the nature of this earthwork is unclear. It currently consists of an oblong area (dims. 52m N-S; 39m E-W), defined by a timber fence from W-E and by a linear stone field wall (long axis E-W) along the S. - TS059-081003 Settlement cluster
Description
In pasture, adjoining castle site (TS059-081001-) to NW. The Civil Survey (1654-6), refers to 'a castle garrisoned and thirtie thatcht houses and cabins. The s[ai]d castle and lands of Grenane is a manor with the Royalties of a court leete and barron,' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 42). Smyth (1985, 125) mentions that there were 'fifteen hearths' in the townland of Greenane in 1667. According to the OS letters 'Cloghawodeen (Cloch a Bhóidín) is said to have been formerly a little village: the name is still retained as that of a field in the Townland of Greenane, adjoining (or near) the site of the old castle' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 38). This field, immediately S of the castle site, is marked on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Cloghawodeen'. There is no visible trace above ground of a deserted settlement. Immediately NW of the castle (TS059-081001-) and earthwork (TS059-081002-) there is a rectangular area (dims. 72m N-S; 68m E-W) defined by the remains of a levelled bank (overall Wth 11.1m; Wth at top 3.9m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.5m) and external fosse (Wth 6.4m; D 0.15m). The bank and fosse are visible to the E (L 28m), N (L 64m) and W (L 44m), but does not survive above ground to the S. There are gaps (Wth c. 4-6m) at the middle of the N side and at the N end of the S side. The interior has a few undulations, but nothing clearly discernible.
