- GA114-072 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
On a rise in level pastureland. This well-preserved circular ring-barrow (diam. 45.7m) comprises a low flat-topped mound (diam. 21.3m) encircled by a fosse and external bank. McCaffrey (1952, 26, 283, no. 9; 1955, 223) referred to a stone-lined ‘trough’ or ‘passage’ (L c. 3m; Wth/H c. 0.2m) in the NW quadrant, which led towards the centre of the barrow. It was built of drystone walling and roofed with lintels. A similar ‘passage’ lay to the N. No visible surface trace of these features was noted. A number of trees have been planted all over the monument and numerous rabbit burrows are evident. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 12 August 2019
- GA114-073 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 283, no. 9a) as a circular ‘Earthen fort’ (diam. c. 84.8m ext.) defined by a bank and external fosse; the latter was evident only around W half of the monument. No visible surface trace survives. A souterrain (GA114-073001-) lay within the interior. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 December 2017
- GA114-073001 Souterrain
Description
Within a rath (GA114-073----). During the course of land reclamation in 1976 a bulldozer removed a roof lintel from this souterrain; it was subsequently investigated by Prof. E. Rynne (pers. comm.). The two-chambered drystone-built souterrain (L c. 28.5m) was well preserved and roughly L-shaped in plan. The 1st chamber (L c. 19m; Wth 1.9m; H 1.5m) runs NW-SE. Access was gained to it near its NW end. The 2nd chamber (L 9.5m) extended from the N end of the E side-wall and ran ENE-WSW. Alcoves were evident at NW end of the 1st chamber at the NE end of the 2nd one. The souterrain has been filled in and a slight depression now marks its location.
