- GA107-058002 Ritual site - holy well
Description
Immediately S of a children’s burial ground (GA107-058001-). This natural spring well is known locally as ‘Our Lady’s Well’ and is visited each May. It is defined by an oval drystone well chamber (1.1m E-W; 0.9m N-S; D 0.8m) around which lies a scatter of loose stones (Wth 0.9m), most likely field-clearance material. A small alcove built into the S sector of the well contained religious icons and money, and more were also scattered around the W sector. The well was dry on inspection and, according to local information, the water source had moved near the large tree just W of the well. A number of natural depressions in the nearby rock outcrop are known locally as ‘St Brendan’s knees’. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 28 March 2023
- GA107-059 Children's burial ground
Description
In level grassland adjacent to a road. This poorly preserved and much-overgrown wedge-shaped children's burial ground (L 25m; Wth 14.5m) is defined by tentative traces of a bank along the S side. Within it numerous set stones indicate graves aligned E-W. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 30 August 2019
- GA107-193 Castle - unclassified
Description
On a low but locally prominent hillock 200m to the NW of a stream. According to the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 2, 81), the 'natives' reported that there was a 'castle' in this townland but no location was specified. Local tradition points to this hillock as the site. A series of irregular grassy banks, scarps and berms, particularly on the E and S slopes of the hillock, indicate the former presence of earthworks. These have been disturbed at E by quarrying. On the summit itself a flat platform (NW-SE 16m, NE-SW 8m) is defined by a scarp, the surface of which is dotted with a number of large blocks of dressed limestone. These include fragments of an arch and a chamfered portion of a window jamb or fireplace mantel, the dressing on which suggests a 16th or 17th-century date. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 6 June 2017
