• LF004-048 Structure - peatland
  Description

  This structure, orientated N-S, consisted of a disturbed deposit (L 2.03m; Wth 1.27m; D 0.25m) of brushwood (diam. 0.02-0.05m; L 0.06-0.28m), occasional roundwood (diam. 0.12-0.17m; L 0.6-1.2m), twigs and four pieces of split timber (L 0.08-0.55m), which was very loosely and irregularly laid up to six pieces deep. The wood was in poor condition and woodworking was evident on several elements. Species identified included ash, birch and alder. • LF004-049 Structure - peatland
  Description

  This structure (L 6.1m; Wth 5.5m; D 0.23m) consisted of an irregular and widely dispersed deposit of c. 47 roundwoods (diam. 0.06-0.11m; L 0.2-0.3m) and c. 20 pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.025-0.055m; L 0.09-0.72m) laid one piece deep. The wood was in a moderate to good state of preservation, however, the majority of the elements were broken and little appeared to be in situ. Metal-cut toolmarks were evident throughout. Two sherds of post-medieval pottery were recovered from the peat around it, further suggesting disturbance. A wide variety of wood species was used, including willow, hazel, ash, alder, birch and apple-type. • LF004-050 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  This togher (L 4.72m min.; Wth 0.88m; D 0.05m; ), orientated NE-SW, was composed of a single layer of transverse brushwood (diam. 0.015-0.045m; L 0.03-0.38m), occasional twigs and wood chips. It was in poor condition due to truncation by modern drainage and agriculture. These had particularly impacted on the NW edge where the wood appeared to have been dragged, displaced and truncated. In addition, many pieces appeared to have been pushed into the peat at angles of up to 45º. Wood-working was evidenced by metal-cut toolmarks on over twenty pieces. Wood species included birch, ash alder and holly. Radiocarbon dating revealed a date range of 390-170 cal BC (2204±39 BP; Wk-25190).   Description

  This togher (L 2.2m; Wth 0.88m; D 0.28m), orientated E-W, was composed of irregular brushwood (diam. 0.015-0.04m), a single roundwood (diam. 0.07m) and occasional twigs. The wood was heavily fragmented with no pieces over 0.38m in length. It was, however, in a moderately good state of preservation. Only two metal-cut toolmarks were recovered. Wood species included hazel, alder, birch, ash, willow, apple-type and ivy. The togher lay 4m W of another togher (LF004-050----) and 2m N of a possible structure (LF004-052----) (Moore and O'Connor 2009b, 15, TOM 4).   Description

  This possible structure (L 3.18m; Wth 1.26m; D 0.14m) consisted of a sparse deposit of fifteen pieces of fragmentary brushwood and twigs. All of the elements were broken and little appeared to be in situ due to disturbance by modern drainage and agriculture. However, the wood was in good condition. One artifact, a fragment of finely dressed brushwood was recovered adjacent to it; the only other woodworking evidence was a single metal-cut toolmark. The structure was located 2m S of a togher (LF004-051----) and 4m ENE of another possible structure (LF004-053----) (Moore and O'Connor 2009b, 16, TOM 5).   Description

  This possible structure (L 0.17m min.; Wth 0.35m; D 0.2m) consisted of two pieces of parallel brushwood and occasional irregular brushwood fragments. The wood was broken but in good condition. One metal-cut toolmark was evident. It was located 4m SSW of another possible structure (LF004-052----) and it extended beyond the development footprint (Moore and O'Connor 2009b, 16, TOM 6).
