  Description

  Situated on a gentle W-facing slope in undulating terrain, under tillage. Depicted as a roughly circular enclosure on both the 1st (1843) and current (1952-3) ed. OS 6-INCH maps. This site has been levelled - a curving field boundary to the N and the suggestion of a fosse to the S (diam. c. 39m) are all that remain. Field clearance material has been dumped against the field boundary bank (Wth 1m; H 1m). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. • TN047-045 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on a natural rise off the crest of a NE-facing slope. A well-preserved bivallate ringfort consisting of a circular area (diam. 41m N-S; 38m E-W) enclosed by a bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.53m; ext. H 1.87m), a U-shaped fosse (Wth 2.7m; D 0.9m) and a possible outer bank (Wth 2m; ext. H 1.13m). The latter runs from SE through S to W and may be a field boundary which curves to respect the monument. There is a causewayed entrance gap (Wth 2m) at WNW and a modern gap in the E sector (Wth 2.2m). Some stone protrudes from the internal face of the outer bank. • TN048-015 Church
  Description

  Situated on a low rise of ground with good views in all directions and a nearby castle site (TN048-016) to the E. Described in the Civil Survey 1654-6 as a 'church enclosed by a ditch' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 371). A poorly preserved nave (ext. dims. 8.96m N-S; 16.7m E-W; wall T 0.8m) and chancel (7.16m N-S; 7.6m E-W) church constructed with roughly coursed limestone rubble. The nave is best preserved with the W gable intact and central portions of the N and S walls surviving to full height. Only the lower courses of the walls of the chancel survive. A round-arched doorway of seventeenth/eighteenth-century appearance is located at the W end of the S wall of the nave. A single-light window in the centre of the W gable is now obscured by ivy. The graveyard (TN048-015001) wall has been recently restored by a local community scheme enclosing eighteenth and nineteenth-century headstones. Described in the OS Letters as a small two-storey gabled building (int. dims. 21ft (6.8m) x 14ft (4.26m); wall T 5.5ft (1.67m)) with a large fireplace and a chimney in the N wall which according to local tradition was the kitchen of the castle (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 90-91). No visible remains of the castle and bawn (TN048-016002-) at ground level. They were probably replaced by the nineteenth-century house and modern outhouses.
