- TS088-017 Enclosure
Description
In wet, marshy, low-lying terrain on a valley floor with a stream running along the W side of the enclosure. Oval area (diam. c. 43m N-S; 37.4m E-W) enclosed by a flattened bank (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.42m), in places reduced to scarp. A field boundary, consisting of an earthen bank, forms the NW quadrant and another runs along the N quadrant. The edge of the enclosure is very denuded due to cattle poaching. There is a lot of scrub on the edge of the enclosure, the W quadrant is the clearest. There is no definable entrance, however the bank is much denuded. Another enclosure (TS088-087----) is located c. 100m to the N. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 28 November 2013
- TS088-073 Ritual site - holy/saint's stone
Description
On level ground on a gradual E-facing slope on Ardfinnan to Goatenbridge road, opposite Ballybacon road. On the townland boundary. Stone is known locally as a bullaun. Limestone boulder (H 0.43m; dims. 0.72m x 0.52m) with evidence of water erosion including a shallow curved groove (D 0.1m; Wth 0.14m) on top of the stone which continues down one side of the stone. It was formerly embedded in the ground and inscribed on its side is an OS bench mark. When the road was widened in the 1980s the stone was placed on a bed of concrete onto a stone plinth (H 0.66m; Wth 0.79m). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS088-087 Enclosure
Description
A bivallate circular enclosure (int. diam. c. 40m; overall diam. c. 50m) defined by two concentric fosses, visible as a cropmark on satellite imagery (2021 Maxar Technologies, viewed May 2021), identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère. The W side of the inner enclosure is preserved in the N-S field boundary which deliberately curves to respect the monument. Another enclosure (TS088-017----) is located c. 100m to the S.
