- TS055-008 Ringfort - rath
Description
In grassland on a SW-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good views to S, W and N and higher ground to E. Nearby possible ringfort (TS055-029----) 240m to SW, ringfort (TS055-007----) 300m to W and enclosure (TS055-028----) 400m to W. Poorly preserved ringfort consists of a slightly raised circular area (diam. 30m NE-SW; 31m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (top Wth 1.5m; base Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 1.5-0.6m) which has been mainly reduced to a scarp and is best preserved at NE and outer fosse (base Wth 1.2m; top Wth 3m; ext. D 0.5-0.7m) with no entrance feature visible. Interior follows sloping terrain from NE to SW with no effort to raised the interior to create a level interior. Incorporated into corner of field where bank and outer fosse acts as field boundary from N through E to SE. No other features visible. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Description
In flat poorly drained grassland in upland region with stream 100m to E. Moated site consists of a D-shaped enclosure (int. dims. 21m E-W x 30m SE-NW) defined by an earth and stone bank (top Wth 2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.7m) and poorly preserved outer fosse (top Wth 2.5m; base Wth 1m; ext. D 0.2-0.5m), no entrance feature visible. Field drain cuts across the S end of moated site from E-W (L 21m ) to form the enclosing element at S, straight sides to E (L 30m ) and W (L 30m) with curved side at N. Unusual shape, may have originally been oval shaped but field drain to S depicted on 1840 ed. OS may be an original feature of the monument. Typical location for a moated site. Enclosure (TS055-029----) 250m to SE, ringfort (TS055-008----) 400m to E and ringfort (TS055-007----) 250m to NE. Moated site is in a fair to poor condition. Description
In grassland on flat poorly drained pastureland which has been reclaimed with ringfort (TS055-007----) 240m to N, moated site possible (TS055-028----) 250m to NW and ringfort (TS055-008----) 300m to NE. Enclosure consists of a circular area (diam. 23m N-S; 29m E-W) enclosed by and earth and stone bank (top Wth 1.7m; base Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.4-0.2m; ext. H 1m) and wet waterlogged outer fosse (base Wth 1.5m; top Wth 4m; ext. D 0.5m) visible only from S through W to NW only elsewhere it has been levelled. Depicted as in irregular-shaped enclosure on 1843 ed. OS 6-inch map and not marked on 1906 ed. OS 6-inch map. Probably partially levelled between 1840 and 1903.
