• TN022-002 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in undulating countryside on a natural hillock which has been scarped to form a possible ringfort. Present remains consist of a roughly circular area (diam. NW-SE 41m) defined by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank which has been mainly reduced to a scarp (H 1-2m) from N through E to S where it survives as a field fence, elsewhere it has been destroyed. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). • TN022-004 Castle - ringwork
  Description

  Situated just off the summit of a hill on a S-facing slope in an upland area. A raised circular area (diam. NE-SW 36m; NW-SE 32m) enclosed by two flat-topped earth and stone banks and a wide flat-bottomed intervening fosse (Wth 4m) with causewayed entrances at NE (Wth 3.5m) and SE (Wth 2.5m). Evidence of wall-footings protrude from the top of the inner bank (Wth 4m; int. H 1m; ext. H 3.3m) while the outer bank (Wth 2-3m; ext. H 2-3m; int. H 1.7m) is destroyed from N to E.   Description

  Large burnt mound up to 25m across on a slightly E facing slope overlooking an area of wetland. A small saddle quern was recovered from the topsoil stripping.
