Description
Situated on the SE-facing slope of a NW-SE drumlin and just S of a small lough or pond (diam. c. 35m) known as ‘Blind Lough’. It was described in 1967 as a subcircular or D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 54m NNW-SSE; 51m ENE-WSW) that slopes down to the SE. It was defined by an earthen bank (at NW: Wth of base 7.5m; Wth of top 2.6m; int. H 1.7m; ext. H 1.4m) and outer rounded fosse (at NW: Wth of top 5.4m; ext. D 1.1m) SSW-NW, which was reduced to a scarp (at SE: Wth 1.5m; H 2m) SE-SSW. The perimeter was provided by the lough NW-E. A gap at NW was modern but at ENE a ramp, which might also have been modern, led down to the edge of the lake. It had been removed by 2000 (OSAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 8 December 2017
