• LE031-060 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in a small field on a summit of a broad E-W ridge. This feature is depicted as a D-shaped enclosure on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map and similarly on the 1945 revision. It was regarded locally as a rath in 1945 (OSFM). This is a circular of D-shaped platform (dims. 29.5m N-S; 28m E-W; H 0.6m) surrounded by a wet, flat-bottomed fosse (at E: Wth of base 1.8m; int. D 0.3m; ext. D 0.2m), with traces of a slight outer earthen bank (Wth 3m; H 0.2m) N-SE. The platform is overlain by a straight N-S field bank at W and NE-SW field banks with hedges at N and S, forming a small paddock. The original entrance is not identified. • LE031-104001 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Located c. 120m from the River Shannon at a point where it runs NW-SE, and on the line of the N4 roadway. Archaeological excavation (94E0123) in advance of roadworks uncovered an irregularly shaped pit (dims c. 2.2m x c. 1.5m; max. D c. 0.35m) filled with broken and burnt stone. It was associated with a hut-site (LE031-104002-) that was immediately to the NW. • LE031-104002 Hut site
  Description

  Located c. 120m from the River Shannon at a point where it runs NW-SE, and on the line of the N4 roadway. Archaeological excavation (94E0123) in advance of roadworks uncovered what might be the trough of a fulacht fia (LE031-104001-) with this hut-site immediately to the N. This is a circular area (int. diam. c. 5.5m) defined by a U-shaped trench (Wth 0.4-0.5m; D 0.15-0.3m), with an entrance (Wth c. 1.4m) at NE. It has a central post-hole that has a hearth just to its S. No post-holes were noted in the wll-trench, which was partly filled with material from the fulacht fia (LE031-104001-) immediately to the SE.
