- DU018-020266 House - 16th/17th century
Description
Excavations in 1995 at the rear of 107-109 Capel Street revealed walls which pre-dated the tenement basements and may be associated with a 17th century house which once belonged to Speaker Connolly (Conway 1996, 16, 17).
- DU018-020566 Watercourse
Description
Excavations in 1994 exposed a section of watercourse running N-S and contained on its W side by a clay bank. It ran downstream and was channelled in a stone-lined millrace of 13th-14th century date (94E 160).
- DU018-020822 Graveyard
Description
Test excavations in 1999 at 189-194 King Street uncovered a burial ground containing a large quantity of disarticulated human remains. This is located in an area known as Abbey Green in 1558 and apppears to be part of the the land granted to St Mary's abbey by the city in 1213. Approximately 430 articulated human remains were excavated and recorded (Nelis 2000, 71-2).
- DU018-020986 Gallows
Description
The site lies at the eastern end of North King Street, from 189-194 on the southern side of the street, and extends along Halston Street and Green Street. Known originally as Abbey Green, 1558 is the first recorded usage of that name. An archaeological assessment in 1988 revealed in situ articulated and dis-articulated skeletons across the site. The site appears to be a burial-ground. The burials consist of adult male and female burials and infant burials. All are buried in an east-west direction, apart from two infant burials that were buried roughly north-south and lay just inside the site at the Green Street side. Excavations revealed eighteen fully articulated skeletons. The skeletons consist of male and female adults and some children. Initial examination dates them to the late 17th/early 18th century. The site was once home to the city's gallows. Further excavations on the site in 1999 uncoveredc.430 articulated human skeletons along with c. 120 disarticulated human remains. These are likely to be late in date and asssociated with executions at Newgate prison (Nelis 2000, 71-2).
- DU018-303 Burial
Description
In 1976 human remains were discovered during works on the site of Newgate prison. The remains were scattered over an area 3m by 5m (D 0.20-0.30m). The human remains (1976:610) were mixed with bits of sewer pipe, glass and brick of 19th century date. The bones were found to represent the remains of an adult male of small build, aged 20-30 years, and a number of bones of a child aged 2-3 years. Further human remains were discovered with pottery and tiles of nineteenth-century date (NMI, Cahill & Sikora 2011, 469). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 25 February 2013
- DU018-387 House - 18th/19th century
Description
See notes field. P. Walsh, 11 Dec. 2012.
- DU018-426 House - 17th century
Description
The buildings at Nos 218, 219 and 220, Parnell Street, consisted of single bay three-storey structures with evidence for basements in Nos 218 and 219. Inspected in 2001 (SMR file) they were identified as containing fabric of late 17th century date. Nos 218 and 219 were demolished following a major fire in the premises in 2004 and further inspection of the remains confirmed that while a small number of damaged early features survived in No. 220 there was evidence to suggest a significant total re-build in the 19th century. No.220 is a single-bay building that survives at ground, first and second floor levels. It is possible also, that the building had a cellar. The structure appears to have originally comprised a stairhall, with rooms to front and back separated by a corner chimney breast which survives to second floor level: the staircase and some internal partitions no longer exist. Parts of the timber flooring survive at both first and second floor levels. These are in poor condition and have collapsed in places. Panels of internal lath and plaster are visible both in situ and in collapsed areas. A timber-framed partition with lath and plaster survives at first floor level. The façade to Parnell Street is of red Flemish bond brickwork to the top of the first floor window arch. Above this level the façade has been rebuilt, probably in the nineteenth century, in mottled yellow/red English garden wall bond brickwork. There are the remains of a timber shopfront at ground floor level. The first floor wall, above the shopfront, of the Parnell St façade, and the chimney breast are consistent with a construction date in the later 17th century (report in SMR file). No.220 Parnell Street was recorded by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (Ref. 50060493) and given a rating of ‘Regional’ significance based on its special architectural interest.
