- LF022-140 Road - class 1 togher
Description
Originally recorded as a substantial and complex structure; excavation in 2002 revealed a togher (L 90m) orientated ENE-WSW. Its composition was unusual in that it comprised relatively small roundwood (diam. 0.08m max.) and brushwood, which may indicate that the bog was relatively dry at the time of its construction. Its size and orientation suggested that it most likely traversed the width of the bog. It yielded a date range of 300-200 BC (Whitaker 2009, 66). Further evidence of the togher (exposed L 2.6m; Wth 0.95m) was discovered some 51m to the SW as three closely set roundwoods with brushwood and twigs. Description
Remains comprised three roundwoods and four large pieces of brushwood overlain by a bed of twigs (exposed Wth 1m; T 0.2m). One of the brushwood pieces had a chisel-type toolmark. Description
A hurdle panel (exposed L 1.7m; Wth 0.7m), orientated NNW-SSE, consisted of two sails (diam. 0.04m) and the rods (diam. 0.01-0.02m). Another possible hurdle (2m x 2m) lay nearby but it was badly milled and decomposed so identification was not certain. The evidence suggested that this was most likely the remains of a platform. Description
Remains comprised brushwood and roundwood elements (exposed L 4m; Wth 2m). The roundwood (diam. 0.06-0.08m) appeared to be aligned both NE-SW and NW-SE, while the brushwood (diam. 0.02-0.03m) was aligned NE-SW. One roundwood piece, 4.5m to the NW, was similarly aligned. It was also visible in the opposite drain face and there were some degraded elements on the field surface. The evidence suggested that this was likely to be the remains of a platform. Description
Originally recorded as a spread of roundwood and brushwood chips exposed in the drain face. The elements were orientated N-S along the line of the drain. Excavation in 2002 revealed a fairly substantial platform structure (overall L 15m, Wth 5m). Because the monument was considerably longer that it was wide it was classified as a togher although it did not have a typical togher construction. The remains were composed of mostly transverse roundwood and brushwood which comprised a number of layers, 'Context 5' being the most substantial. Two split planks were recorded in this layer and many of the roundwoods had toolmarked ends. Pegs were also evident. The main point of excavation revealed the surface to be uneven and trapezoidal in plan. Excavation yielded a date range of 770-400 BC (Whitaker 2009, 56). Description
Originally recorded as roundwoods with occasional brushwood and split timber. Excavation in 2002 revealed a platform (exposed L 8m; Wth 2.6m) consisting of five distinct layers of parallel roundwood and brushwood, with a date range of 50 BC-AD 130 (Whitaker 2009, 53). The various layers were constructed at different angles to each another. Three parallel roundwoods (diam. 0.051-0.083m) and several irregularly laid small pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.003-0.026m) c. 0.5m to the S of the S elements were likely to be associated. All had toolmarked ends. Short lengths of a togher (LF022-158002-) ran both to the E and W from the platform. A small platform (exposed area 1.4m x 1.2m) located on the field surface was being milled. The remains comprised c. 40 pieces of small brushwood and twigs (diam. 0.01-0.02m) along with four larger pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.05m). All of the rods extended E-W except for the remnants of several transverse small pieces of brushwood. Two possible toolmarks were noted. Further remains were visible in the W face of a nearby drain. Description
A group of tightly packed, parallel roundwoods and brushwood (exposed Wth 3.12m; T 0.27m) extended at an acute angle into the W face of a drain. More than ten elements (diam. 0.025-0.09m) were visible, the majority of which were orientated N-S. Two possible runners were evident underneath them. No toolmarks were visible. The evidence suggested that this was likely to have been the remains of a platform. Description
This platform (exposed L 2m; Wth 1.3m), consisting of small and large brushwood, was located on the field surface immediately to the ESE of a drain; it was largely milled out. One large piece of brushwood, at the SSW end, had a metal-cut chisel-point tip with three facets, one of which was stepped. Eight to ten small and large pieces of brushwood visible in the WSW face of the drain, at a depth of 0.68m, may have been associated with it. Description
Originally recorded as a substantial structure (exposed L 2m; Wth 2.43m) of longitudinal and transverse roundwood, brushwood (diam. 0.015-0.085m) and pegs. Excavation revealed that it was most likely the remains of a platform, aligned NNW-SSE, which was greatly disturbed by modern drainage works. Description
Originally recorded as a transverse piece of brushwood, one peg (diam. 0.03-0.04m) and one longitudinal roundwood (diam. 0.2m). Excavation in 2002 revealed a hurdle panel (1.5m x 0.7m) overlying a togher (L 5.3m; Wth 1.6m) on one side of a drain. The togher, aligned NW-SE, was composed of eleven parallel roundwoods with some interspersed brushwood. It may have extended across the drain and over the adjacent field surface. There were sightings of a similar alignment on this lower field but unfortunately these were destroyed before the excavation could commence. If the sightings were part of the excavated togher, then it may have been 22m in length (minimum) when first constructed. A rim fragment of a turned wooden vessel was discovered beneath the togher during the excavation. It appears to have been a small and shallow bowl (surviving height 0.05-0.06m; diam. 0.13-0.15m) made from alder. The excavation yielded an Iron Age date range of 300-200 BC (Whitaker 2009, 59). The remains comprise three parallel roundwoods (diam. 0.05 to 0.08m) and associated brushwood and twigs (diam. 0.003- 0.026m). There was some evidence of woodworking. Description
Originally recorded as a complex/togher structure (exposed L 9m). Excavation in 2002 revealed a substantial roundwood and brushwood structure, orientated N-S, with a date range of 390-170 BC (Whitaker 2009, 62). Its haphazard arrangement meant no definite purpose could be assigned to it. Roundwood constituted the main building element (80%) while brushwood made up the remainder. Toolmarks were evident. This structure lay 0.05-0.25m below a platform (LF022-179----) but the two do not appear to have been connected. Ten of the elements had toolmarks. The evidence suggested that it was likely to be the remains of a platform (exposed L 3.4m; Wth 2.73m). A date range of 400-410 BC was obtained (Whitaker 2009, 69). Description
Originally recorded as two hurdle panels. The platform lay 0.05-0.25m above a structure (LF022-076001-) but the two do not appear to have been connected. A date range of 400-200 BC was obtained (Whitaker 2009, 62).
