- LE031-022 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on the steep NE-facing slope of a drumlin. This is an overgrown circular area (int. diam. 35m) which is planted with trees. It is defined by interrupted sections of an earthen bank (Wth of base 4-5m; H 0.65m) but largely by a scarp down to the interior (OSFM), with no visible fosse. The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 15 October 2019
- LE031-115 Enclosure
Description
Located on a WNW-facing slope in improved pasture. It was first identified by Susan Curran as part of an M.A. thesis with University College Dublin using a LiDAR survey dataset commissioned by Leitrim County Council and the National Roads Authority. This is a subrectangular area (dims. 34m ENE-WSW; 30m NNW-SSE) defined by a scarp on the S, W and N-sides. It is best preserved at S (Wth 3.9m; H 0.7m), but there is no evidence of a fosse or entrance anywhere, although it may be a rath. The E side is defined by a wide, flat-topped earthen bank (Wth of base 5.1m; Wth of top 2.2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.95m) with an outer drain (Wth of top 3.55m; Wth of bas 0.85m; D 1m), which forms the townland boundary with Dromore and is the boundary of a coniferous forest. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 11 May, 2015
- LE031-117 Enclosure
Description
Situated on a slight SSE-facing slope of an ENE-WSW ridge and planted with a cereal crop. It was first identified by Susan Curran as part of an M.A. thesis with University College Dublin using a LiDAR survey dataset commissioned by Leitrim County Council and the National Roads Authority. This is a subcircular rise (dims c. 14m ENE-WSW; c. 12m NNW-SSE) defined by a very gentle, indistinct scarp which has been levelled out downslope. It may be the remains of a barrow.
