Description
Situated on the gentle E-facing slope of a N-S drumlin ridge, it is known as ‘Liscromaun Fort’. This is a grass-covered oval area (int. dims 46m NW-SE; 33m NE-SW) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at W: Wth of base 4.5m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 3m) S-W-NE which is reduced to a scarp (H 1.4-2.5m) elsewhere, and a complete flat bottomed fosse (Wth of top 5.1-5.5m S-W to 7.1m at E; Wth of base 1m at S to 2-3m normally; ext. D 0.7-1m). The entrance (Wth 4m) is at S. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). Description
The Nesbitts of Derrycarne had Iron works in Annaghduff parish before 1830 (Flanagan 1972, 415) but the date of commencement is not known. The work might have been located at Dromod and an old furnace is indicated on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map in Furnace or Bleankinnew townland, just N of the village.
