• LE031-070 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a rise which is in a col between drumlins c. 300m to the NE and c. 400m to the SW. This is a grass-covered circular earthen platform (diam. 31m) defined by a scarp that is best preserved (H 0.8m) E-S, with a slight berm (Wth 2m) at its base at S. An original entrance is not identified, and the perimeter is truncated slightly by a farm shed at SW. Rath (LE031-071----) is c. 100m to the E. • LE031-071 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located towards the top of a S-facing slope. A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 40m) is depicted on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Fort’, and it is depicted as small field on the 1945 revision. This is a circular earthen platform (diam. c. 30m) defined by a scarp which is best preserved E-S (H. 0.5-1m). The monument was landscaped as a lawn in 1991 (SMR) but had been truncated into the D-shaped SE quadrant of a rath by 2000 (OSAP). Rath (LE031-070----) is c. 100m to the W. • LE032-051 Crannog
  Description

  Located towards the E end of Gortconnellan or Spa Lough, a rectangular lake (dims c. 550m ENE-WSW; c. 230-300m NNW-SSSE). This is an overgrown island of sand and gravel (dims 28m N-S; 23.5m E-W; H 1.5m) which has been planted with coniferous trees. There is no visible surface evidence of artificial construction, but its origin as a crannog is very likely.
