- RO022-134 Ringfort - rath
Description
At the crest of a small E-W drumlin ridge. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 50m E-W; 43.8m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2-2.6m; int. H 0.2-0.5m; ext. H 0.2-0.6m) with some bushes which is incorporated into a field bank SW-NW, and reduced to a scarp (H 0.3-0.5m) N-E and SSE-SW. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. Description
Marked as a small feature (diam. c. 20m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a slight E-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 17m NE-SW; 16.9m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 3-3.3m; Wth of top 0.8-1.1m; int. H 0.2-0.6m; ext. H 0.4-0.6m) which is missing WNW-NNW. There is no visible fosse, but the entrance (Wth 0.9m) is at N and bedrock protrudes through the sod at the centre. It is overlain by a NE-SW drystone field wall towards the perimeter at SE. Description
At the head of a slight NW-SE valley with a stream 20m to the S. U-shaped grass-covered mound (dims 14m E-W; 8.5m N-S; H 0.2m at E to 0.6m at W) with a rectangular hollow (dims 2.8m N-S; 2.5m E-W) on the S side.
