• RO045-167001 Enclosure
  Description

  On a rise in an undulating landscape. Oval grass-covered area (dims 38m WNW-ESE; 28.6m NNE-SSW) defined by a scarp (at NNE: H 1.25m) which is stone-faced in places but is poorly defined ENE-SSW (at SSW: H 0.8m). The entrance (Wth 7.3m) is at S. It was used as a burial ground (RO045-167002-), and there are two lines of grave-markers (L c. 10m NNE-SSW) in the interior and a single stone 16m NNW of the perimeter. A stone head which was kept at a house nearby before being donated to NMI (RO045-168----) may have come from here. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  Marked as a burial ground only on the 1915 ed. Of the OS 6-inch map in an area called Caltragh, and located in the interior of enclosure (RO045-167001-). There is a line of grave-markers (L c. 10m NNE-SSW) in the S interior with traces of a second line c. 1m to the E. There is a single stone 16m NNW of the perimeter.   Description

  On the crest of a low NW-SE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 32.9m ENE-WSW; 32.5m NNW-SSE) defined by an earthen bank with some bushes (Wth 4-4.6m; int. H 0.35-0.45m; ext. H 1.15-1.35m) and an outer fosse (Wth of top 4.5-6.4m; Wth of base 1.2-2.7m; D 0.35-0.75m). The entrance (Wth 2.4m) and causeway (Wth 2.9m) are at SSE. • RO045-171001 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  References to O'Kelly of Colnegir date from 1585. Coolnageer castle and about 500 acres was owned by Egnaham McDonell O'Kelly in 1617 (Moore 1978, 59) and in 1641 (Simington 1949, 101). Egnaham's son, Daniel, married Elizabeth Osbalston c. 1639. She was a daughter of Edward Osbalston who had been Chief Justice of Connaught in 1602. Dispossessed in the 1650s, the O'Kellys sought restitution into the 1660s but were apparently denied. The lands were ultimately acquired in the early 18th century by the Lyster family, who built a house at Lysterfield c. 700m to the NNW. The castle is described as a stony mound at the E corner of moated site (RO045-171002-) (Gannon 1972). It is not visible now at ground level.   Description

  On an undulating, low-lying landscape with a NW-SE stream immediately to the NE. Described as a rectangular area (dims 56m NW-SE; 45m NE-SW) defined by earthen banks at NW and NE separated by a fosse at the SW, NE and SE sides from outer banks at NW and SE (Gannon 1972).   Description

  On a slight rise in an undulating landscape. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 27.7m NE-SW; c. 26m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4-4.2m; int. H 0.35-0.45m; ext. H 0.85-0.95m), with an outer fosse (at SW: Wth of top 4m; Wth of base 1.4m; D 0.3m) best preserved SSW-WNW. The entrance (Wth 5.9m) is at ENE. There is a record of four slight depressions in the NE quadrant (Gannon 1972), which may have been a souterrain (RO048004002-) but which are no longer evident.   Description

  Marked faintly as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as portion of an enclosure on the 1915 ed. Situated on a low-lying level landscape.
