Description
On a flat, low-lying landscape. A peninsula (dims c. 200m NW-SE; c. 80m NE-SW) with many bays and hummocks projects NW from the S shore of Clooncullaan Lough North (dims c. 600m E-W; c. 150m N-S at W to c. 300m N-S at E). Description
Marked as a rectangular island (dims. c. 20m x c. 20m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and now situated at the N point of a peninsula (dims. c. 200m NW-SE; c. 80m NE-SW) projecting from the S shore of Clooncullaan Lough North (dims. c. 600m E-W; c. 150m N-S at W to c. 300m N-S at E). Circular grass-covered stoney area (diam. 10m) rising over the peninsula (H 0.2m). Possible crannog (RO022-055002-) is c. 30m to the W, and possible crannog (RO022-055004-) is c. 120m to the S. Description
In the central part of Clooncullaan Lough (max. dims. c. 300m N-S; c. 200m E-W). Circular grass and scrub-covered island (diam. 16.4m E-W; 15.4m N-S; H 1m) built on marl. Visible on aerial photographs (ACAP V206/50, 51). On the S shore at the W end of the W part of Clooncullaan Lough (dims. c. 800m E-W; c. 100-200m N-S) at the point where the W end of the lake turns S. Description
Visible on aerial photographs (ACAP: V206/51), and situated at the N edge of a broad, low-lying plateau. Oval grass-covered area (int. dims 44m NW-SE; 36m NE-SW) defined by a parch-mark (Wth 3-5m) in drought conditions or a slight scarp, with slight traces of a bank (Wth 4m; H 0.2m) at N. Description
Marked as an island (dims. c. 40m N-S; c. 25m E-W) on the 1837 ed. Of the OS 6-inch map, but it is now attached to the E shore of the N part of Clooncullaan Lough (dims. c. 640m E-W; c. 350m N-S) by an isthmus which is cut by a shallow fosse (L c. 10m; Wth 4m; D 0.3m). Oval grass-covered mound (dims. 53.4m N-S; 46.7m E-W; H 1.5m). The charred stumps of posts can be seen on the shore SW-W and at N while there is a shallow grass-covered quarry (Wth 2m; D 0.2m) and mound (L 12m) on the summit. Description
Marked faintly as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 50-60m) only on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a low knoll in a low-lying landscape. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 33m E-W) defined by a slight scarp (Wth 3-4m; H 0.9-1.1m) W-N-E which merges into the ground elsewhere. Rath (RO023-010----) is c. 200m to the ENE. Marked as a subrectangular enclosure (dims c. 60m N-S; c. 40m E-W) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a small field (dims c. 40m N-S; c. 30m E-W) on the 1914 ed. Situated on a NE-facing slope. Rectangular grass-covered area (dims c. 45m E-W; c. 32m N-S) defined by straight sections of an overgrown field bank (Wth c. 2m; H c. 1.4m) at W and slight scarps elsewhere. Description
Marked faintly as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m) only on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a gentle NE-facing slope of a col with slghtly higher ground c. 150m to the SW and c. 300m to the NE. Description
Just off the crest of a drumlin on the gentle S-facing slope. Oval area (dims 34.5m N-S; 27m E-W) with apple trees defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 2.7-3.3m; int. H 0.2m at N to 0.7m at W; ext. H 0.4m at N to 1.4m at W) which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.6m) planted with coniferous trees NE-SE. There is no visible fosse, but there is a modernised entrance (Wth 3m) at SE. Farm sheds are built on the perimeter at E and SE, and some spoil is added to the perimeter N-NE. Description
Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1837 and 1914 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a gentle S-facing slope. Description
On a gentle S-facing slope at the S edge of a broad, low-lying plateau. Circular overgrown area (diam. 20.9m N-S; 19.6m E-W) defined by an overgrown earth and stone bank (Wth 2.8-3.3m; int. H 0.3-0.7m; ext. H 0.2-0.5m) with some inner facing-stones at WNW, and an outer fosse (Wth of top 2-2.7m; Wth of base 1.1-1.3m; D 0.2-0.3m) SW-N-SSE. An entrance (Wth 1m) at SSE may be original. Marked as an island (diam. c. 10m) in the small Drinaun lake (max. dims c. 250m E-W; c. 120m N-S) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. The lake has is reduced to a small pond (diam. c. 20m).
