Description
On the gentle S-facing slope of a broad low hill. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims c. 25m N-S; c. 25m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.3-4.8m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 0.4m) W-N and a scarp (H 0.4m) N-E and SW-W, with an outer fosse (Wth of top 4.3-5m; D 0.3-0.45m) SW-W-NE. There is no identifiable original entrance, and the monument is truncated by a N-S field bank and drain at E and an E-W field bank and townland boundary with Dangan (King) at S, beyond which is a farm track. Description
On top of a broad low hill. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 27m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.55m) NE-ENE, and a scarp (H 0.7m at SSW) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or entrance. The site is bisected by a NNE-SSW field bank and cut at E by the perimeter of rath (RO011-141002-), while rath (RO011-140----) is c. 150m to the N. Description
On top of a broad low hill. Circular grass and covered area (diam. 26.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank N-NNE (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.7m) and E-S (at S: Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m), and a scarp (H 0.3-0.7m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or entrance, but a pond surrounded by trees has been excavated inside the perimeter at NE. Marked as a circular enclosure with trees on the perimeter (diam. c. 35m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on the SE-facing slope of a broad low hill. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 29m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.2m at S to 5.4m at NE; int. H 0.25m at S to 0.9m at NW; ext. H 0.6m at NW to 1m at S) S-E and scarp (H 0.6-1.05m) elsewhere, with trees planted on the perimeter. There is no visible fosse or entrance, and a NW-SE laneway to Dangan House c. 50m to the NW skirts the perimeter at NE. It may be a tree-ring. Description
On a low rise in a low-lying landscape with a NW-SE stream or drain c. 30m to the SW. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 22m) defined by a scarp (H 0.3m at N to 0.9m at S), with an outer fosse (Wth of top 7-7.8m; D 0.35-0.6m) at N and E-SE, but the fosse is reduced to a berm SSW-SW. Description
Identified by John O'Donovan in the 1830s as Daingean Bona Cuilinn which was burned in 1145 (AFM vol. 2, 1079), the name Dangan (daingean) means stronghold. It was called Dangen I Beirne and had a fair on 25th May in the later 16th century. Donogh O'Birne held it in the early 17th century (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 2, 11), and his son Donogh owned a quarter amounting to 160 acres there in 1641 (Simington 1949, 29). It does not feature in the history of the Mac Dermot clan of Moylurg (Mac Dermot 1996). It is described as the site of Dangan Castle on the 1837 and 1911 editions of the OS 6-inch map, and iis situated on a low rise in a low-lying landscape, but no features are visible at ground level in pasture.
