  Description

  On the summit of a broad, low hill. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 47m E-W; 44m N-S) defined by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth of base 4-6.5m; Wth of top 1-1.4m; int. H 0.25-0.6m; ext. H 0.8m at W to 1.7m at E) and hedge, and a rounded fosse (Wth of top 5-6m; Wth of base 1.5-2.2m; D 0.2-0.6m) NNW-E-SW. There is an entrance (Wth 2.2m) at NNW.   Description

  Marked on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as 'Druid's Altar, and described on the 1915 ed. as the site of a Dolmen. It is situated on a low-lying, level landscape. It was described c. 1910 as the site of a 'Druid's Altar' (OS Name Book), and later described as a collection of boulders in a field wall (Gannon 1972). These have since been removed and replaced by a modern replica of a megalithic tomb (H c. 1m). Archaeological testing (06E0750) immediately to the S produced no related archaeological material (Morahan 2010b). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
