• RO034-070 Moated site
  Description

  Marked as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on the 1837 and 1929 eds of the OS 6-inch map and situated at the crest of the N-facing slope of a broad W-E spur. This is a rectangular grass-covered area (dims 50m NNE-SSW; 27.5m WNW-ESE) defined by a NNE-SSW field bank at W, a scarp (Wth 3.8m; H 0.4m) at E, an earthen bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.7m) and hedge at S, and a band of nettles (Wth 2m) at N. It is divided into two by a grass-covered E-W ditch or depression (Wth 4m; D 0.3m) and the field bank at W probably truncates the monument. Geophysical survey (09R145) confirms that it was rectangular and surrounded by a fosse or ditch (Wth c. 3m), which extends off to the S (L c. 50) from the centre of the S side (Barton 2009). Archaeological testing (09E0525) 50-100m outside the monument to the N, E and S failed to produce any related material (Morahan 2012). • RO034-071 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Marked only on the 1929 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a small mound (diam. c. 10m), and situated on a slight rise at the crest of the N-facing slope of a broad W-E spur. This is a circular, domed and grass-covered mound (diam. 22.5m N-S; 21m E-W; H 0.25m). Geophysical survey (09R145) confirms that it was a mound (diam. c. 8m), possibly with a central pit, enclosed by a fosse (ext. diam. c. 12-15m) and outer bank (max. ext. diam. c. 25m), which may have had an entrance at SW (Barton 2009). Archaeological testing (09E0525) outside a buffer zone ((Wth c. 30m) failed to produce any related material (Morahan 2012). Moated site (RO034-070----) is c. 40m to the NW.   Description

  On the N-facing slope of a broad W-E spur. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 36m E-W; 32m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 3.8-5.5m; int. H 0.4-0.7m; ext. H 1.45-1.9m) and a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 8-8.5m; Wth of base 3.6-4.8m; D 0.65-1m). There is an entrance (Wth 2.4m) and causeway (Wth 4m; H 0.2m) at ENE (max. ext. diam. 48.7m N-S). Archaeological testing (09E0525) c. 20m to the W failed to produce any related material (Morahan 2012). Rath (RO034-075----) is c. 100m to the S and rath (RO034-073----) is c. 150m to the E.   Description

  On the N-facing slope of a broad W-E spur. Described in 1969 (SMR file) as a subcircular area (int. dims c. 40m E-W; c. 36m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (int. H c. 0.6m; ext. H c. 1.8m) and flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of base c. 2.5m; D 0.6m) which was removed before 1972 (Gannon 1972). It is not visible at ground level in pasture.   Description

  On a gentle W-facing slope of a broad W-E spur, and first identified by Gannon (1972). This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 36m E-W; 33m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3-4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.4-0.65m) at NW-N and S-S, and by a scarp (H 0.25m) S-NW. The straight E side is defined by a scarp (H 0.6m) and has been truncated by a N-S field bank and hedge. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. Enclosure (RO034-076----), immediately to the NE, impinges on the perimeter at NE.   On a gentle W-facing slope of a broad W-E spur, and first identified by Gannon (1972). This is a rectangular grass-covered area (dims 22m N-S; 19.5m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.8m) at N and earthen banks (Wth 2.5-3.2m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.8-1.05m) at W and S, but it is truncated by a field bank and hedge at E. The SW angle encroaches on rath (RO034-075----), distorting its perimeter at NE.   On the SW-facing slope of a small NW-SE spur. Circular grass-covered platform (diam. 17.6m NW-SE; H 0.4-0.7m) defined by a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 8.2-10.2m; Wth of base 3.4-4.5m; D 1.5m) with some reeds, and an outer grass-covered bank (Wth 5.6-6.2m; H 0.25-0.6m) with some furze (max. ext. diam. 40.5m NW-SE).   Description

  On a gentle NE-facing slope towards the E end of a low W-E spur. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims. 42.5m E-W; 36.8m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.2-4.4m; int. H 0.4-0.9m; ext. H 1-1.6m) with some whitethorn bushes. There is no visible fosse, and an entrance (Wth 2.5m) at SW (Gannon 1972) is no longer visible. Rath (RO034-073----) is c. 180m to the WNW.
