- RO024-024 Road - class 1 togher
Description
This site was located at the W edge of Cloonshannagh bog. It was initially recorded as a Class 2 togher in 2008, during the Archaeological Survey of Ireland Peatland Survey (Rohan 2009). It was recorded at 13 sightings (a-m) for a distance of 200m. In 2010 it was excavated in three cuttings which were located at the W extent of the togher at sightings ‘a’, ‘b’, and ‘c’ (Rohan & Whitaker 2013). The 2013 Re-assessment Survey carried out on behalf of BnM identified two previously unrecorded sightings at the E extent of the togher which were recorded as ‘n’ and ‘o’ which extended the length of the togher to 215m (Whitaker 2014). In 2015 the site was excavated again at sighting ‘i’ (Coughlan & Whitaker 2019). The 2015 excavation (licence 15E0191) uncovered a togher consisting of multiple surfaces. The upper surface of the site was composed of transversely laid (N-S) heavy brushwood and roundwood. There were two distinct structures present placed immediately side by side. The N structure represented the main body of the site. This part of the trackway consisted of brushwood and roundwood with pegs. The upper surface was 3.44-4.35m in width. Immediately underlying was a second layer of transverse elements forming a surface 2.5–4.2m in width. A third layer of transverse wood and pegs was uncovered in the W part of the cutting. It covered an area measuring 1.76m by 3.2m max. These elements appear to have been added to support and maintain the level surfaces above. Most elements and pegs found in this part of the site had toolmarked ends. The wood was in poor to moderate condition. The S structure was composed of transversely laid roundwood and brushwood. It measured 2.2–2.77m in width and was delineated with pegs. The elements were laid one to two layers deep. They were irregularly shaped. Several elements and pegs had tool-marked ends or were worked. Wood samples taken from this site were dominated by alder, ash and hazel. The worked wood samples were internally quite varied. The site was dated to cal. 766-539 BC (Coughlan & Whitaker 2019). Compiled by: Ros O Maoldúin/Michael Moore, Edited by: Femke Vleeshouwer, 15 April 2020 Date of upload: 12th April, 2011

Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. Excavations in 2010 (Rohan & Whitaker 2013) revealed that four sites previously identified as Platforms during the 2007/2008 Archaeological Survey of Ireland Peatland Survey (Rohan 2009) formed part of a linear togher, which is described under RO024-025----. The other platform sites are RO024-048--- and RO-024-057---. The 2013 Re-assessment Survey (Whitaker 2014) recorded this site at thirteen sightings CLS115a-m (partial sightings of a-d remained after the 2010 excavations) and in 2014 sighting ‘d’ was excavated (Coughlan & Whitaker 2019). Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a possible platform site, exposed in section, in an E-facing drain (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 (licence 14E0274) and dated cal. 1877–1635 BC. The site appeared to represent a roundwood fence-type structure, orientated N-S. It was constructed of four vertical roundwood pegs, which had brushwood and roundwood elements intertwined and woven between them. The wood was species identified to alder, ash and birch. The worked ends were eroded, and composed of small facets. Elements identified in the opposing drain face c. 5m south of the excavated cutting appeared to represent a continuation of the structure (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). The excavated site consisted of mainly NW–SE oriented roundwood and brushwood elements, and a deposit of lighter brushwood to the SE. Three roundwoods overlay the main structure and were separated from it by a layer of peat. Underlying the second deposit was an arrangement of roundwood, brushwood and twigs, overlying an apparent hummock in the peat. Several toolmarked ends were noted. Four supporting pegs were found. The wood deposits were dominated by birch, alder and pomoideae with lesser amounts of ash, elm, hazel, oak and holly (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a platform exposed in section in an E-facing drain face for a width of 2.1m. It was composed of roundwood and brushwood (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2015 (licence 15E0198) and dated to cal. 999-849 BC. The excavated site was composed of several layers of brushwood, roundwood and hurdle structures, forming a platform. The uppermost structure consisted of an E-W arrangement of closely placed heavy brushwood elements forming a surface located within the N half of the cutting. Underlying it was a similarly oriented, small, fragmentary hurdle. A layer of sparsely laid roundwoods oriented NNW to SSE traversed the cutting from the NE corner towards the SW corner. Underneath a separating peat layer was a collection of four hurdle panels forming a surface. This surface was disturbed by several large root bowls and tree stumps. The final substructural layer of wood was composed of a sparse arrangement of mainly NE-SW orientated roundwood and brushwood elements interspersed with tree stumps and root bowls. Several toolmarked ends were noted. The elements were constructed from a wide variety of woods including alder, birch, blackthorn, hazel, oak, holly, pomoideae and willow. Bark was recorded on the majority of the hurdle rods (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Compiled by: Femke Vleeshouwer/Jane Whitaker/Tim Coughlan Date of upload: 15 April 2020

Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as exposed in the drain face, 0.3m below the field surface. It was composed of four elements that were sparsely laid in two layers (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 (licence 14E0266). It was dated to cal. 756–409 BC (UBA 26570). The excavated remains consisted of scattered brushwood elements that were randomly set with no clear pattern. The elements were of moderate to poor preservation. Two timbers orientated NW-SE southeast in the N of the cutting may be associated with another site. The site may represent a scatter of wood discarded from another site nearby. The majority of the roundwood/brushwood and worked ends were hazel followed by one alder brushwood and one alder roundwood. One of the hazel brushwood was forked. Five of the elements had the remains of metal tool facets cut at shallow angles (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Compiled by: Femke Vleeshouwer/Jane Whitaker/Tim Coughlan Date of upload: 16 April 2020

Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a peatland structure, consisting of a single short length of heavy roundwood 0.11m in diameter exposed in the drain face 0.5m below the field surface. The element was very dried out, measured 0.51m in length and had been worked to a flat faceted, wedge point at its N end. The surrounding peat was well humified Sphagnum peat with occasional Phragmites, Calluna and Eriophorum inclusions (Whitaker 2014). The site was fully sampled during the course of the 2013 survey, for wood species identification and dating. In 2015, the find spot was relocated using GPS (licence 15E0196): however, no additional remains were located. The element sampled in 2013 was identified as alder, and dated to cal. 380–186 BC (Whitaker 2018). Compiled by: Femke Vleeshouwer/Jane Whitaker/Tim Coughlan Date of upload: 16 April 2020

Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Peatland Reassessment Survey as a structure exposed on the field surface and the drain face on it W side (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 under licence 14E0270, and dated to cal. AD 418-571. The structure was found to be a platform, consisting of alder, birch, hazel and willow roundwoods and brushwoods, laid in a generally haphazard manner. The overall combined orientation was roughly E-W. The elements were relatively sparsely set and were in poor condition, often fragmentary, and those at the surface had been milled. A number of worked ends were identified, many associated with small brushwood pegs or stakes. As with the other elements of the structure there was no clearly identifiable pattern to the stakes. Two toolmarks were retained for specialist analysis (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Compiled by: Femke Vleeshouwer/Jane Whitaker/Tim Coughlan Date of upload: 17 April 2020

Description
This site is located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Peatland Reassessment Survey as located on the field surface alongside the drain edge. It was composed of brushwood elements many of which had bark intact and were identifiable as birch (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014, under licence 14E0273, and dated to cal. AD 549-646. It consisted of very fragmentary remains of scattered brushwoods near the field surface. There was evidence of machine damage and it is possible that this represents the remains of a structure that was once more substantial. A number of small possible stakes/pegs were noted, but it is unclear what function these served within the overall structure or whether they represented disturbed elements (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Description
This site is located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Peatland Reassessment Survey as a roundwood superstructure overlaying a brushwood substructure, exposed on the field surface (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 under licence 14E0268, and dated to cal. AD 657-858. It was found to be a platform orientated E-W, although the precise limits were difficult to establish. The main structure consisted of longitudinally laid heavy brushwoods interspersed with 2–3 small roundwoods and lighter brushwood. There was a cluster of possible pegs/stakes at the S end. The wood was generally well preserved with the exception of elements that had been damaged on the surface by milling. An additional slot trench was opened 1.2m to the E of the main cutting. A number of elements were evident, notably however extending N-S, effectively transverse to the main elements. A second slot trench was opened to the S of the main cutting. A couple of elements were identified, but there was no clear structure to the material. The wood species identified was predominantly birch, with some alder, ash, elm, pomoideae and hazel also present (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Peatland Reassessment Survey as a togher, visible on the field surface at two sightings across the width of a single field (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014, under licence 14E0269, and dated to cal. AD 676-877. On excavation, the monument was found to be a platform rather than a togher. It was sub-rectangular in shape, and consisted of mainly brushwood elements as well as some small roundwoods. The smaller elements were laid with a N-S orientation, with the brushwoods laid over them orientated E-W. The elements were moderately to well preserved with bark present on many. The lower brushwood elements were quite densely packed with the overlying roundwoods more sparsely laid. A number of smaller brushwood elements continued beyond the E site limit, although the larger roundwoods had clearly terminated. It is unclear therefore if the site continued across the field to the east. Approximately 12 worked ends were recorded. Identified element species were alder, hazel and holly (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Compiled by: Femke Vleeshouwer/Jane Whitaker/Tim Coughlan Date of upload: 17 April 2020

Description
This site is located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Peatland Reassessment Survey as a togher, composed entirely of brushwood elements. It was visible in two sightings on the surface of one field with a gap of c. 18m between them (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014, under licence 14E0267, and dated to cal. AD 888-1013. It was a complex structure, most likely a platform, constructed of many different depositions of brushwood and small roundwood material. Hazel was the dominant species on this site followed by birch, ash and alder. Several toolmarked ends were noted. The primary layer of the sub-structural deposits consisted of very densely laid brushwood. These had been laid both E-W and N-S. This densely pack brushwood layer was overlain by roughly transversely laid roundwoods and heavy brushwoods, that possibly represent the main structural component. These had been laid in two layers, and were densely packed with a NW-SE orientation. A series of longitudinally (N-S) roundwoods and large brushwoods were evident laid centrally and along the W limits of the transversely laid layer. A layer of peat was identified overlying the lower elements of the structure outlined above. The upper elements of the overall structure were identified above the peat layer. Many of them represented small localised deposits of wood/brushwood. The main structure was formed by roundwoods and heavy brushwoods, many of which had been damaged by milling on their upper surfaces. They were orientated NE-SW and had a moderate density. Smaller deposits consisted of patches dense brushwood, and may relate to a finer walking surface on the top of the structure. They were orientated both N-S and E-W. The final element of the structure consisted of a series of 28 vertical pegs (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Compiled by: Femke Vleeshouwer/Jane Whitaker/Tim Coughlan Date of upload: 17 April 2020

Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the Reassessment Peatland Survey 2013 as an irregular deposit of closely placed roundwood and brushwood elements. It was located in an area 2.14m E-W by 6.5m N-S on the field surface alongside the drain edge (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2015 under licence 15E0200, and was dated to cal. AD 1016-1154. It was found to be a roundwood and brushwood togher, 0.97–2.37m in width and orientated N-NW. Many of the elements had been machine damaged and were fractured along their lengths. Others had evidence of small branch trimming. The elements were apparently loosely scattered around some heavier longitudinals. Some fragmentary wood remains were noted on the field surface to the NW beyond the limit of the cutting. Fifty-seven toolmarks were noted which consisted of mainly flat single faceted chisel points with occasional wedge points noted. Alder and birch were dominant in the wood species identified. Other species included hazel, pomoideae, holly and cherry (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Compiled by: Femke Vleeshouwer/Jane Whitaker/Tim Coughlan Date of upload: 17 April 2020

Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as exposed on the field surface, and composed of nine brushwood elements that were laid side by side (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 under licence 14E0272, and dated to cal. AD 1039-1207. It consisted of less than a dozen poorly preserved brushwoods, laid longitudinally within the cutting with an E-W orientation. They were sparsely laid and in poor preservation. As the site was located on the field surface the excavated elements may represent the remnants of a more substantial structure that has been milled away, or it may have been the site of a small, localised, simple platform (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Description
This site is located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a a roundwood and brushwood togher exposed on the field surface and also visible in section at the nearby drain edge (Whitaker 2014). The togher was excavated in 2014 under licence 14E0275. It consisted of predominantly brushwood elements, generally orientated N-S, although somewhat haphazard in terms of construction. Most of the elements were poorly preserved. They were species identified as birch, and hazel with one willow roundwood. The elements were most dense in the west of the cutting near the drain edge. There was one peg which may provide evidence for a connection to the nearby site RO-CLS154. It is possible that the elements identified in the excavation have been discarded from another structure that may have been substantially removed by the drain (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). Description
This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as exposed in section in a W-facing drain face 0.12m below the field surface for a width of 2.95m. The roundwood and brushwood elements were in poor condition and there was a lot of sedge and grass roots over and between the elements (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2015 (licence 15E0201). The site was found to be an isolated platform of 3.4x3m in size. It was dated to cal. 339–46 BC. The small roundwood and brushwood site consisted of mainly E-W oriented elements. At the E extent of the cutting along the drain edge, the central elements were closely placed birch and ash roundwoods and birch, ash, willow and holly brushwoods oriented E-W. They were supported by a fine layer of twigs and woody detritus. To either side were more sparsely laid, lighter brushwood elements. Eight brushwood pegs were found. Twenty tool-marked ends were noted which were mainly chisel point ends with flat to slightly concave facets (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019).
