- SL027-010 Ringfort - rath
Description
In low-lying poorly drained rough grazing. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an embanked circular area (diam. c. 20m) and on 1914 OS 6-inch map as an arc of hachures NNW-SE on the E side of a field boundary and bisected E-W by a second field boundary. It is now evident as an irregular raised area (c. 30m E-W; H 1.6m) densely covered in overgrowth with a N-S field boundary crossing the interior off-centre to W and an E-W field boundary off-centre to N. The rath is quarried into at E and S with an isolated short section of a slightly curving bank or field boundary (Wth 3m; H 0.9m) remaining along the SE arc. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008

The interior is covered with a dense growth of irises. Field boundaries lie immediately to N and E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Description
On an E-facing slope, just below the summit of a high ridge. A raised circular area (int. diam. 21m) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.4m) has gaps at NW (Wth 1.4m) and SE (Wth 2.5m). The outer bank (Wth c. 2m; ext. H c. 0.4m) is evident E-SW and NNW-NNE, incorporated into field boundaries elsewhere. The fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.4m) is choked by a dense growth of rushes. An E-W stone field boundary crosses the S half of the interior.
