- SL014-134 Ringfort - rath
Description
Crowning a low but prominent elevation, with a gradual fall of ground for c. 500m to E to the banks of the Garvoge River. Formerly the demesne land of Cleveragh Estate, the location is now a public park, on the SE edge of Sligo Town. There are excellent views N to the Dartry Mountains. Slightly raised circular area (diam. c. 30m) defined by a broad earthen bank, with an external fosse evident on the N arc. The rath is largely engulfed in overgrowth, which impedes examination. Beech and chestnut trees were planted in the interior, and sycamores and hawthorn trees ringing the perimeter. The enclosing bank appears as a broad earthen rise (Wth c. 5.5m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.6m, at N), with a pronounced external slope, and a low, broadly slumped internal slope, merging seamlessly with the interior to give the rath a saucer-like profile. Outside the bank on the N arc, there is a fosse, evident as a broad, shallow depression (Wth 5-6m). - SL014-298 Burnt mound
Description
In parkland on the SE side of Sligo Town, located at the edge of a grassy expanse bordered to E by woodland. This burnt mound was discovered in 2008 during archaeological test-trenching in advance of proposed development works (Hackett 2008). It was visible at surface ground level as a semi-circular area at the edge of treeline cover. Excavation of the test trench (G) revealed a concentration (12 x 15m; D 0.3m) of heat-shattered stones (limestone and some sandstone) and charcoal. There is another burnt mound (SL014-299----) a few meters to SE. (Hackett 2008). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 July 2019

- SL014-300 Enclosure
Description
In parkland on the SE side of Sligo Town, ground falls away steeply to S. This circular enclosure (int. diam. c. 20m; ext. diam. c. 34m N–S) is not shown on the 1838 and 1940 OS 6-inch maps, but a roughly circular cluster of trees is shown on both map editions. The enclosure was archaeologically tested in 2008 in advance of proposed development works (Hackett 2008). It is defined by low remnants of a partly levelled earthen bank (Wth c. 4m). Three test trenches (Wth 1.9m), opened across the E half of the enclosure, revealed that the bank has both an internal and an external enclosing fosse. The excavated profile of the external fosse (Wth 1.8m; D below topsoil 1.1m) showed it to have a steeply sloping outer side, a U-shaped base and a gradually sloping inner S side. Its basal fill incorporated frequent stones, charcoal inclusions and substantial amounts of iron smelting slag (59.6 grams recovered). The fosse (Wth 1m; D below topsoil 0.3m) on the inner edge of the bank is less substantial; its profile has a gradually sloping sides and a rounded base. A terminus for this fosse was found towards its E end, suggesting a NE entrance to the enclosure. (Hackett 2008). There is a rath (SL014-134----) 230m to NE. - SL014-301 Enclosure
Description
Located on a terrace on a N-facing slope, in parkland formerly part of the Cleveragh Estate, on the SE side of Sligo Town. To S ground rises in a steep, wooded slope; to N-NE there is a gradual fall of ground towards the Garvoge River, through an area that now constitutes a public park. This enclosure is not shown on the 1838 and 1940 OS 6-inch maps, but is indicated on the 25-inch plan as a D-shaped hachured area (c. 35m NW–SE; c. 20m NE–SW), bordered on the straight side at SW by a NW–SE field boundary. This boundary is extant, consisting of a high estate wall, which now marks the S limits of the public park. On the ground, there is slight evidence that the enclosure extends to SW of the wall, and may in fact be circular (diam. c. 35m), bisected roughly centrally by the wall. A low, D-shaped platform (30-35m E–W; c. 20m N-S; H c. 0.8m at NW) is evident, corresponding with the hachured area shown on the 25-inch map. It is almost entirely engulfed in overgrowth, and cannot be fully examined. It is possible that low undulations visible on the NW arc may represent an enclosing fosse (Wth c. 2.5m) with an external bank (Wth 2m). The straight SW side of the D-shaped platform is defined by the high, mortared stone wall (Wth 0.5-0.6m; H 1.7m), corresponding with the NW–SE boundary shown on the 25-inch plan. Immediately to SW of the wall, a roughly semicircular area (c. 30-35m E–W; c. 15m N-S) of differential vegetation growth, with traces of a possible irregular bank on the W arc, may represent the SW half of the originally circular enclosure.
