- CW013-065 Flat cemetery
Description
Extensive cemetery of pit and cist burials associated with bowl and vase food vessel and cordoned urn pottery, apparently covering much of Ballon Hill. References to largely levelled entrenchments and earthworks and 'the site of old rath', suggest hilltop may have been enclosed, possibly with ringfort or with ring-barrow associated with complex. No visible surface traces. Area has been cleared and improved. (JRSAI 1853, 295; JRSAI 1959, 31-3, with refs; JRSAI 1970, 109). Test trenching carried out within area of constraint in 2005 by Coilin Ó Drisceoil (Ó Drisceoil, 2008, p. 18) failed to reveal anything of archaeological significance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 03 February 2009

- CW013-067 Enclosure
Description
Described by Graves (JRSAI 1852-3, 297) in his article on the Ballon Hill cemetery (CW013-065----) as follow: 'The site of the old rath … here digging proved most difficult, as it was paved with great blocks of stone, set on end, and fitting close together'. Research carried out by Ballon Hill Archaeology Project identified an enclosure (diam. c. 60m) on Bing Maps (http://www.bing.com) (pers. comm. Nial O'Neill), probably the same monument described by Graves. This enclosure is c. 100m NNE of the location identified on the 1995 RMP map. A review of the SMR file suggests there was not sufficient evidence for the location assigned on the 1995 RMP map, hence the location of this monument has been moved to the centre point of the enclosure visible on Bing Maps. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 13 March 2013 Revised by: Claire Breen
- CW013-068 Enclosure
Description
Formerly classified as 'Earthworks' in the Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow (Brindley and Kilfeather 1993, 22, no. 136) based on the description by Graves (JRSAI 1852-3, 296), in his article on the Ballon Hill cemetery (CW013-065----) which states that, 'On the summit … were formerly large and curious entrenchments, locally known as "The walls of Troy". These … have from time to time been all carted away by the neighbouring farmers for manure, so that not a trace ... now remains'. Following research carried out by Ballon Hill Archaeology Project a small roughly circular enclosure (diam. 30-40m) has been identified on the summit. The project has also identified a possible hilltop enclosure (CW013-124----) encircling the summit of the hill which incorporates the smaller enclosure in its NW quadrant. The 'walls of Troy' may refer to a maze of sod or turf on the summit, similar to one in Ballynavortha, Co. Wicklow (WI042-035----) (Manning 2004, 166-68). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 11 March 2014 Revised by: Jean Farrelly

Description
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 22 December 2009 Revised by: J. Farrelly Present remains consist of E portion of rectangular structure (min. L 5m; Wth 4.7m) of roughly coursed granite boulders, with some dressed granite quoins. Chancel is built on steep E-facing slope. Several quoins and a granite moulded window jamb are in use as grave markers; window jamb incorporated in stile at SW corner of graveyard (CW013-070002-). Quoins suggest fifteenth- or sixteenth-century date. Recent renovations of E gable and portion of N wall. Distinct curve in road, suggesting former circular enclosure.
- CW013-070002 Graveyard
Description
Trapezoidal in shape (map dims. c. 28m N-S at the E end and c. 58m N-S at W end and c. 75m E-W). Church (CW013-070001-) roughly centrally placed. - CW013-071001 Enclosure
Description
According to O’Toole (1933, 235), within a roughly rectangular ‘garden’ (dims. c. 22m NW-SE; c. 17m NE-SW) there is, ‘a small enclosure which is called the “old Church-yard.” It is stated that it was formerly used for the burial of unbaptized children [CW013-071002-] and that within this enclosure there was, ‘a very remarkable stone [CW013-071003-]’. The enclosure was levelled c. 1970 (Seaver and O’Neill, unpublished report, February 2022). According to an ASI field report (September 1988), ‘The stone formerly stood at the centre of a small enclosure defined by an earthen bank about 8m distant from the stone. To N of stone and inside [the] bank a trench (L c. 3m) with baked sides and filled with white ash or burnt bone was found during cultivation. There are no visible surface traces of the bank and the stone has been moved to the adjacent field boundary’. Prehistoric pottery was found in 1940 in rabbit burrows under the ‘stone’ (Seaver and O’Neill, unpublished report, February 2022). Based on the available information it is not possible to classify the enclosure with any certainty, though its association with prehistoric pottery and a possible funerary monument (CW013-071003-) suggests it may be a barrow. There are no visible surface traces of the bank and the stone has been moved to the adjacent field boundary’. O’Toole describes the stone as being, ‘hexagonal in shape, five of the sides consisting of straight lines and the sixth is curved. It is six feet eight inches [2.03m] in length from east to west, and five feet ten inches [1.78m] from north to south; the depth is two feet [0.61m]. It is high in the centre and curves gently to the sides. In the middle of the upper surface there is a shallow basin-shaped hollow from which fourteen groovings or flutings, run to the outer edge. The sides of the stone seem to have been chiselled, but they are now overgrown with moss’ (ibid.). The ASI field report (September 1988) describes, a ‘Large granite boulder (c. 1.2m dim.). Upper surface has pattern of grooves, possibly artificial but forming no particular pattern although appearing to radiate from a central area’. A report in The Nationalist and Leinster Times 21 June 1947 describes the ‘Druid’s Altar’ as, ‘a burial stone of the cromlech group, resting on four supports sunk to foundation depth’ (Seaver and O’Neill, unpublished report, February 2022). The supports are also mentioned by Fr. Peadar Mac Suibhne, who describes how the boulder had, ‘stones under it like legs under a stool’ (ibid.). Prehistoric pottery was found in 1940, in rabbit burrows under the ‘stone’ (ibid.). Based on the available information it is not possible to classify the boulder with any certainty, though its association with prehistoric pottery and the reference to support stones suggests it is part of the megalithic tomb tradition or a boulder-burial. - CW013-124 Hilltop enclosure
Description
A large roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 120-140m) encompassing the summit of Ballon Hill. The monument is visible on Bing aerial imagery (identified by Nial O’Neill, Ballon Hill Archaeology Project). The S and SW sector is defined by a field boundary and elsewhere the monument appears to be defined by scarp. A smaller enclosure (CW013-068----) has been identified within this possible hilltop enclosure, off-centre in the NW quadrant (Ballon Hill Archaeology Project). Graves (1852-3, 296), in his article on the Ballon Hill cemetery (CW013-065----), notes that, 'On the summit … were formerly large and curious entrenchments, locally known as "The walls of Troy". Description
In tillage on the W edge of Ballon village. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m), identified as the cropmark of a fosse on satellite imagery (Google Earth satellite imagery, 21 July 2021) by Jean-Charles Caillère. Dark staining evident in the W sector of the interior may indicate a waterlogged area or back-filled quarrying.
