Description
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 16 December 2009 Revised by: J. Farrelly Present remains consist of portions of N and S walls and W gable of simple rectangular structure (min. L 6m; Wth c. 5m) of irregularly laid limestone rubble in unenclosed graveyard (CW002-002002-). Probably of late medieval origin. Possibly associated with St Leger castle (CW002-003----).
- CW002-002002 Graveyard
Description
Depicted by a dashed line on the 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as a rectangular enclosure with a church (CW002-002001-) NE of centre. A road ran c. 50m roughly N-S to the E and a lane to a farm ran E-W along the northern boundary of the graveyard. By the latest 6-inch ed. a railway line had been constructed and the road alignment altered to run parallel with this section of the railway line, both road and railway line truncating the E side of the graveyard, particularly the SE portion (map dims. 56m N-S; 33-50m E-W). Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown as standing on island in River Barrow on Down Survey (1655-6) map. Built by St Leger family. Subsequently passed to Butler family before passing to Bests. Probably stood on or close to farm buildings c. 200m W of church (CW002-002----). Large quantities of stone removed from here to the Larchfield estate about 20 years ago. Present walls are of later date.
