  Description

  The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Marked on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as 'Site of Knocknagann Rath'. Location suggests a ringfort. Indication on 1908 OS 6" map suggests a large enclosure. No visible surface traces.

Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Granite stone with rectangular section, badly eroded with deep grooves (H c. 1.5m; dims. at base 0.7m x 0.65m). Aligned NW-SE. (JRSAI 1939, 104).

• CW009-005 Moated site
  Description

  Situated on gentle NE facing slope overlooking Derreen River 220m to E. A natural gully or shallow ravine running E-W can be seen immediately N of the monument. Present remains consist of a rectangular area (48.4m N-S, 43.8m E-W) surrounded by well-defined flat-topped earth and stone bank (Wth 2m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 0.7-2m) and deep wide flat-bottomed external fosse (Wth 3m; ext. D 1-2m). Entrance gap (Wth 4m) close to centre in E side. The enclosing fosse is visible from NE-E-S-W-NW and is best preserved from S to W. Second outer bank exists at E only, not clear if this second bank is an original feature or the remains of a post-1700 field boundary. Traces of shallow fosse 25m E of outer bank probably indicates adjacent enclosed field of post 1700 date. S half of interior of moated site now covered in thorn bushes, while N half of monument in pasture.   The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Rectangular area enclosed by low bank with external stone-faced fosse (CW009-007001-), in which stand foundations of tower (CW009-007002-) (dims. 6.6m x 4.5m) with rectangular structure (CW009-007003-) aligned N-S (min. L 20m N-S; 5.5m E-W) attached to E wall of tower. Small annexe (4m x 4.5m) projects from SE corner. Leat leads from SE corner of fosse, dividing to run into and out of Derreen River to E of complex. Field system (CW009-007004-) to S of moated site. According to O'Toole (JKAS 1932, 71-74), may have belonged to Augustinian Order. (Gwynn and Haadcock 1988, 368; Comerford 1886, vol III, 352-3)

  Description

  Rectangular area defined by a rush filled stone faced fosse on S and W sides, townland boundary on N side and structure (CW009-007003-) on E side. Foundations of tower (CW009-007002-) in NE quadrant. A deep rush filled leat is separated from the fosse by a causeway, it leads SE to the Derreen River where it divides, one branch running N to join the river above the weir and a second running S where it joins the river below the weir.   Description

  In tillage. A large oval enclosure (dims. c. 81m NW-SE) visible as a cropmark on Google Earth (imagery date 14 July 2018), identified and reported by Simon Dowling. A field boundary runs N-S through the W sector and other E-W through the S section. The cropmark is only visible from N-E-SE. A standing stone (CW009-003----) is located c. 50m to the S.   Five-arch granite built road bridge over river, c. 1800, with cut stone voussoirs, triple keystones and imposts. Renovated, c. 1875, with replacement coping added. Renovated, c. 1925, with central arch reconstructed.
