- KK009-035 Ringfort - cashel
Description
A little below the crest of a hill, on the SW side of NW-NE valley, in rolling grassland. There are very good views in all directions. A circular area (int. dims. c. 54m N-S; 51m E-W) defined by a wall of well-coursed field stones (Wth 3m; H 1.5m-2m). An entrance in the S (Wth 3m) is possibly modern or has been modified. A blocked entrance at E (Wth 1.5m) appears to be original. The interior is raised at the centre (H 0.5m) and drops to a level area (Wth c. 8m) inside the perimeter wall. - KK009-037004 Sheela-na-gig (present location)
Description
Sheela-na-gig built into a wall in a farmyard. The original location is unknown but it is likely that it come from either Balleen Castle (KK009-037001-), located c. 100m to the E, or Balleen church (KK009-038001-), located c. 200m to the SE, both on land attached to the farmyard. The figure is carved within a recessed frame (H 0.39m; Wth 0.27m) on the right hand side of a roughly rectangular slab (dims. H 0.45m; Wth 0.52m; minimum D 0.15m). Described by Freitag as a figure with a, 'Big, skull-shaped head with jug ears and strong facial features; thick ovoid eyes, flat wedge nose, deep striations on both cheeks, thick-lipped, open mouth displaying two rows of gritted teeth. Flat, pointy breasts at shoulder level; clearly marked ribs; big round navel. Arms in front of body with both hands reaching into vulva indicated as slit; fingers barely discernible. Legs widely splayed and bent; feet pointed outwards. A plait-like band hangs from left ear and disappears behind left shoulder’ (Freitag 2004, 133). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien and Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 9 July 2018 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 3/1992).
- KK009-039 Enclosure
Description
Slighty below the crest of hills on the SW side of a valley, in rolling grassland with good views. On the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map this is indicated as a small sub-rectangular field, which is depicted on the 1900 revision as being more circular (diam. c. 50m), though it appears to be composed of short lengths of straight walling. The enclosure was levelled in the mid-20th century. It is described locally as having been enclosed by a wall 5 feet [1.5m] high and 5 feet [1.5m] thick, with a slight slope from N-S. This enclosure may have been a small field or haggard associated with the farmyard immediately to the NW. It is not visible at ground level and is now occupied by farm buildings. Description
Slightly below crest of hills on the SW side of a valley, in rolling grassland with good views. Indicated as an oval enclosure on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map and as a more circular enclosure (diam. c. 41m) on the 1900 revision with a NE-SW field boundary incorporated into the SE-S sector. The enclosure was levelled when visited in 1987, however, it was described locally as being defined by a stone wall similar to that at enclosure (KK009-039----) c. 320m to the NW. Description
On the lower slopes of a NW-SE valley, at transition to valley floor, in rolling grassland. There are fair views across and along the valley but views are impeded by rising ground to the SW. A roughly circular area (int. dims. 48m N-S; 43m E-W) enclosed by a wall of tumbled boulders (Wth c. 7-8m; H 1.6m). There are two entrances, an enlarged entrance at E (Wth c. 5m) and another one (Wth 2m) at the NNE. The interior is flat, with a slight drop to the E along the E perimeter. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 5 February 2018
- KK009-124 Enclosure
Description
On quite a steep NE-facing slope on the NE side of a ridge running SE-NW overlooking a valley running NW-SE, in rough pasture. The view is good N and extensive E but is blocked to the S and W by rising ground. Identified on statellite imagery by Katherine McCormack, this enclosure is not depicted on any OS maps. A slightly oval enclosure (diam. 31m N-S; 36m E-W) defined by low grass-covered stoney bank (int. H 0.5-0.95m; ext. H 0.25-0.65m; Wth at crest 1.1-1.4m; overall Wth 3.3-3.65m) with a slight fosse (Wth 2.3-3.2m; D 0.2-0.35m) visible in the NW quadrant. It is built into the slope of the ridge. The bank is quite denuded in the NE quadrant, is very low but evident from NE-S-SW and is best preserved from SW-W-N. There is a concentration of thistles growing in the interior.
