• KK022-025 Enclosure
  Description

  Overgrown with trees and scrub, in pasture. Indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as a square enclosure (dims. c. 38m N-S and E-W) with an adjoining pond (dims. c. 20m NW-SE; c. 15m NE-SW) at the S end of the E side. Three other similarly sized natural ponds are indicated c. 10-20m to the SE, S and SW. On the 1899-1900 revision of the OS 6-inch map the enclosure is depicted as being sub-circular (diam. c. 45-50m). A field boundary runs E-W c. 5m N of the N perimeter. • KK022-027001 Church
  Description

  In a river valley, c. 80m E of a meandering stream called the Craosóg (O’Kelly 1969, 192). The OS Letters (1839) mention, ‘a large and much frequented burying ground here’ (O’Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 55-6 (19)). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 321), the ancient parish of Tullamaine, consisting of Tullamaine and Knockrea townlands, was united to the Rectory of Callan before 1300 and the parish church, ‘dedicated to St. Catherine, Virgin and Martyr, (Nov. 25th), stood on the breast of the fertile rising ground of Tullamaine, where it slopes to the south-west. Every vestige of it has disappeared’. The church is not indicated on the 1st (1839) or revised 1899-1900 ed. of the OS 6-inch map.   Description

• KK022-027004 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  In a band of trees on the W bank of meandering stream called the Craosóg (O'Kelly 1969, 192). The OS Letters (1839) mentions, 'a holy well here called Tubber Maoin or Maon's Well, having a very large ash tree growing near it. It is not now visited for any devotional purposes' (O'Flanagan 1839, vol. 2, 55-6 (19)). Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 321) also refers to, 'the holy well now called "Tullamaine well.", which is, 'shaded by a venerable ash'. He relates that, 'The Irish name of the holy well of Tullamaine is now pronounced Thubbervweenia (Tiobar-Mhaighne), that is, Maighin Well. • KK022-027005 Settlement cluster
  Description

  In a river valley, E of a meandering stream called the Craosóg (O’Kelly 1969, 192) and S of a church (KK022-027001-) and graveyard (KK022-027002-). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 321), the ‘field to the south of the churchyard is called “the Old Street,” and hence must be the site of some ancient village’. O’Kelly (ibid.), also mentions, ‘The Sean-bhaile, Old street, and Old court are fields lying south of the churchyard denoting a hamlet formerly’. Neither Carrigan or O’Kelly mention the Callan-Kilkenny road which runs NE-SW c. 40m S of the graveyard and it is unclear whether the fields referred extend S of this road.
