- KK014-039 Enclosure
Description
On a slight rise at the N end of a ridge between two streams, on stoney ground, under tillage. There are very good views in all directions. A circular (int. diam. c. 45m) enclosure is indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map within an area of woodland and, in the accompanying OS Letters, it is noted as one of 'two ancient Raths' in the townland (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 39 (13)). According to local tradition it is known as the 'Large Rath'. The enclosure is not indicated on the 1946-7 OS 6-inch revision though the area of woodland is which suggest the enclosure may have been levelled by this date. It is visible as a cropmark on satellite imagery (Google Earth, 28 June 2018) with a wide deep fosse (Wth c. 5m). See attached Google Earth image (imagery date 28 June 2018) Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 2 June 2020
- KK014-040001 Enclosure
Description
On gently sloping land rising E from a small stream which flows N-S c. 60m to the W, in grassland and tillage. There are fair to good views in all directions. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 38m) identified as a cropmark on an aerial photograph (CUCAP BPI036, 14 July 1970). A modern fence bisects the enclosure which is not visible at ground level. Another enclosure (KK014-040002-) lies c. 90m to the SSW. See attached aerial photograph (CUCAP BPI036, 14 July 1970) Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 3 June 2020
- KK014-040002 Enclosure
Description
On gently sloping land rising E from a small stream which flows N-S c. 50m to the W, in grassland and tillage with a strip of woodland immediately to the W. There are fair to good views in all directions. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 44m) identified as a cropmark on an aerial photograph (CUCAP BPI036, 14 July 1970). The enclosure is not visible at ground level. Another enclosure (KK014-040001-) lies c. 90m to the NNE. - KK014-116 Earthwork
Description
On a slight rise on top of a broad flat ridge between valleys running N-S, in tillage. There are excellent views in all directions. Forms S rise of slight saddle-back with 14-39 on N rise. Very stoney fields. According to the OS Letters (1839), 'two ancient Raths in the Deer Park are the only antiquities that have been discovered in this parish' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 39 (13)). Only one enclosure (KK014-039----) is indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map. However, another monument, described as an 'earthen mound with no stone' and known locally as the 'little rath' was identified during ASI fieldwork in 1987 and is probably the 'rath' referred to in the OS Letters. This was located within a small tree plantation (dims. c. 70m NW-SE; c. 35m NE-SW) within the deer park of Dunmore Park demesne. Both it and the plantation had been levelled by 1987. - KK014-118 Designed landscape - tree-ring
Description
A large oval enclosure (diam. 50m NW-SE; overall NE-SW 65m) visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (ASIAP (18) 30-33, August 1996). The W portion of the monument is in a different field and does not show up clearly as a cropmark but appears as a darker area in the field. The enclosure is indicated as a large tree-ring on the 2nd ed. 6-inch OS map. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 31 August 2015
