• KK019-026216 Burial ground
  Description

  Mass burial pits associated with the former Kilkenny Union Workhouse (established 1843) excavated (05E0435) in 2006 by Brenda O'Meara following its discovery by Cóilín Ó Drisceoil during archaeological monitoring (05E0435) of groundworks for the construction of the MacDonagh Junction shopping centre (O'Meara 2006, 154-62; 2009, 272; Geber 2011; 2015). The burial ground was sited in the SE of the workhouse precinct, in an area of open space outside the women's yard of the complex. A total of 63 complete or partial (truncated) subrectangular pits were excavated and human skeletal remains, totalling 970 individuals, were found in all but one. The burial ground was in use between 1847-50 and resulted from high mortality within the overcrowded workhouse as a result of typhus, scurvy and other diseases. All burials, bar four, were positioned with the head to the SW and the feet to the NE. Within each burial pit the number of interments varied from nine to 25 individuals, laid out in rows of three or four and buried four to six deep. All the individuals had been interred in coffins and in some cases fragments of coffin wood and nails survived. The pits were backfilled with a mixture of topsoil, silty subsoil and underlying gravel. Inclusions of lime and sulphur (brimstone) were recorded in the soil. Finds associated with the burials included a number of textile pouches containing rosaries, copper finger rings and religious medals. An isolated cremation burial deposit (KK019-026217-) of probable Bronze Age date was also found within the site, truncated by one of the 19th century burial pits.   Description

An isolated cremation burial deposit of probable Bronze Age date was also found within the site, truncated by one of the 19th-century burial pits. The burial consisted on a shallow pit (truncated L 0.66m; Wth 0.72m; D 0.06m) filled with charcoal, ash and burnt bone (O'Meara 2006, 156). Hipped roof with replacement artificial slate, clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, sproketed eaves, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Unpainted rendered, ruled and lined walls with rendered quoins to corners, and panel to side (north) elevation having moulded surround. Square-headed window openings with concrete sills, moulded rendered surrounds, and one-over-one timber sash windows having iron sill guards to ground floor. Rendered pubfront to right ground floor with pilasters, fixed-pane timber window on panelled riser, glazed timber panelled double doors having overlight, fascia having consoles, and moulded cornice. Square-headed door opening to side (north) elevation with cut-limestone step, moulded rendered surround, and timber panelled door having overlight. Interior with tongue-and-groove timber panelled counter having carved course supporting counter top, glazed timber panelled partition screens, timber display shelving, timber posts supporting beams to compartmentalised ceiling, diagonal tongue-and-groove timber panelled ceiling, and timber panelled shutters to window openings to upper floors. Road fronted on a corner site with concrete footpath to front.

  Remains of Union Workhouse complex, built 1840-1, on a symmetrical plan comprising:(i) Freestanding two-bay three-storey double gable-fronted block originally attached possibly forming terminating 'tower'. Refenestrated, post-1926. Remainder of range demolished, 1994. Now disused. Pitched double gable-fronted (M-profile) slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, cut-stone coping to gables, and iron rainwater goods on cut-limestone eaves having timber fascias. Irregular coursed cut-limestone walls with tooled limestone ashlar quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with cut-stone sills, limestone ashlar voussoirs (forming camber relieving arches to top floor), and replacement timber casement windows, post-1926. Round-headed openings to gables with cut-stone surrounds having chamfered reveals, and timber fittings. Square-headed door openings with limestone ashlar voussoirs, and tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors.(ii) Detached seven-bay single- and two-storey workhouse range originally attached on a symmetrical plan comprising seven-bay single-storey spinal range with single-bay single-storey projecting bay to centre having elliptical-headed carriageway, and eight-bay two-storey perpendicular range to south having four-bay two-storey lower flanking ranges continuing into five-bay two-storey lower flanking range to east. Subsequently in use as county hospital, post-1926. Closed, 1942. Now in use as depot. Pitched slate roofs (hipped slate roof to spinal range) with clay ridge tiles, cut-limestone, rendered and red brick Running bond chimney stacks on limestone ashlar bases, vents to apexes (comprising square-profiled stages supporting lattice panels on cut-limestone sills with shallow pyramidal slate roofs over having lead ridges, and exposed timber eaves), gabled limestone ashlar bellcote to apex (comprising round-headed aperture on tooled limestone ashlar base having carved course supporting piers with stringcourses, voussoirs, cut-limestone coping, and bell now missing), and cast-iron rainwater goods on exposed timber eaves. Irregular coursed squared rubble limestone walls with limestone ashlar dressings including quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, some having red brick block-and-start surrounds, some having limestone ashlar voussoirs, one-over-one and two-over-two timber sash windows (most now boarded-up). Some elliptical-headed openings including carriageways with tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs (most now boarded-up with some retaining timber boarded double doors).

  Detached two-bay two-storey double-pile house, c.1800, incorporating fabric of earlier house, c.1725, with single-bay single-storey lean-to projecting bay to left ground floor. Extended, c.1825, comprising three-bay single-storey recessed lateral wing to right forming L-shaped plan having single-bay single-storey projecting porch to corner. Mostly refenestrated. Hipped and pitched double-pile (M-profile) slate roof (lean-to to projecting bay; hipped gabled and pitched roof to wing) with clay ridge tiles, roughcast chimney stacks, and iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Painted roughcast walls with segmental-headed recess to projecting bay (possibly originally opening), and rendered stringcourse supporting battlemented parapet to porch. Square-headed window openings (elliptical-headed window openings to projecting bay; pointed-arch window openings to porch) with cut-stone sills, and replacement uPVC casement windows retaining some six-over-six timber sash windows throughout (fixed-pane timber windows to projecting bay; three-over-six timber sash window to porch having traceried overlight). Set in own grounds with painted roughcast boundary wall having coping supporting iron railings, and projecting bay fronting on to road.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built 1915, with single-bay two-storey gabled entrance breakfront, and two-bay single-storey gabled projecting perpendicular wing to left having four-bay single-storey side (west) elevation. Hipped gabled slate roof to main block (gabled to breakfront) with pitched (gable-fronted) slate roof to wing having clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, timber bargeboards to gables having king posts to apexes supporting cross finials, and cast-iron rainwater goods on exposed timber eaves. Painted rendered, ruled and lined walls. Pointed-arch window openings (paired to ground floor main block) with concrete sills, inscribed 'keystones', hood moulding to first floor breakfront, and one-over-one timber sash windows. Pointed-arch door opening approached by seven steps with moulded reveals, hood moulding over, replacement timber panelled door having sidelights, and overlight. Flat roof to porch not visible behind parapet. Unpainted fine roughcast walls with rendered coping to parapet to porch.
