• MA092-076 Enclosure
  Description

  In improved pasture, located on a ridge with a gentle fall of ground for c. 100m to S to the shores of Lough Bekan. This possible rath is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a roughly oval enclosure, with trees planted in the interior, and on the 1917 edition as a subcircular enclosure (diam. 35-40m) bordered at N by an E−W road. It has been levelled but the faint outline of a slightly raised roughly circular area (diam. c. 30m) can be discerned. The enclosing scarp is best preserved at ENE–SE where is survives as a low rise (H 0.4m). The enclosure is clipped on its N edge by the disused E−W laneway. A field fence on a N–S axis crosses the interior to E of centre. The bulk of the interior is grass-covered; the portion lying to E of the fence is planted with conifers. Listed in the SMR (1991) and the RMP (1997) as 'enclosure -possible' on the basis of a feature visible in a black and white aerial photograph (GSI M 95-6; Roll 213, pr. 35). • MA092-112 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In rough pasture, located on a terrace on a NE-facing slope. At the base of the slope is a natural depression of wet ground. Slightly raised circular area (37.4m NW–SE; 34.6m NE–SW) defined by a partly levelled scarp (H 0.6m at SE, NW; 0.3m at W), which is best preserved on the NE half. A slight depression (Wth c. 2m), wet in parts, immediately outside the scarp hints at a possible encircling fosse. A property fence, on a NW–SE axis, crosses the enclosure to SW of centre. A shallow linear depression (Wth 3.8m, 2m at base), deepest at its NE end extending from the field fence through the interior to the scarp at NE. Faint cultivation ridges traverse the enclosure interior a NE-SW axis. Grass cover, with ferns and brambles spreading in the NE half. There are several old quarry pits dug into the downslope of the ridge to N–NE of the enclosure, the closest being 5m to NE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 May 2022

• MA092-114 Burnt mound
  Description

  In pasture, located on a small peninsula of gently elevated stony ground, which projects into the NE end of Bekan Lough. The peninsula is surrounded by the lake on the S, W and N sides; on the E side there is a natural depression of wet ground beyond which ground rises to a ridge –the peninsula may have been almost an island in the past. An elongated surface spread of shattered stone in black charcoal-rich soil was exposed by ploughing. The spread (Wth 7.4m) extended for 20m in a shallow arc SSW–N, with a few small discrete patches (1-2m across) of burnt stone 4-6m to N and NE. There is a burnt mound (MA092-116----) c. 140m to N, a burnt mound (MA092-115----) c. 130m to ESE, and an another possible burnt mound (MA092-117----) c. 180m to ESE. • MA092-115 Burnt mound
  Description

  In pasture, located on gently rising ground close to the NE shore of Bekan Lough. When inspected in 1998 this levelled burnt mound was visible as a roughly semi-circular area (diam. c. 12m) marked by shorter grass growth, with black soil exposed in parts which were denuded of vegetation. It appeared to be composed of a concentration of stone fragments. The straight side faces SW towards the lake. There is a burnt mound (MA092-114----) c. 130m to WNW, a burnt mound (MA092-116----) c. 200m to NNW, and a possible burnt spread (MA092-117----) c. 25m to SE. • MA092-116 Burnt mound
  Description

  In pasture, at the base of a SW-facing slope close to the N shoreline of Bekan Lough. The mound (diam. c. 8m) is visible as a very low, sod-covered rise with small patches of stony black soil exposed where the surface has been denuded by farm stock. The full original extent of the mound is unclear. Traces of cultivation ridges, on a NE–SW axis, are discernible in the surrounding field. There is a burnt mound (MA092-114----) c. 140m to S, a burnt mound (MA092-115----) c. 200m to SSE, and a possible burnt spread (MA092-117----) c. 220m to SE.   Description

  In pasture, on the NE shore of Lough Bekan. When inspected in 1998, this burnt spread was visible as a roughly circular area (diam. 6-8m) of black soil marked by differential vegetation growth; no stones were visible. Its full original extent is unclear. There are a burnt mounds (MA092-114----; MA092-115----; MA092-116----) c. 180m to WNW, c. 25m to NW and c. 220m to NW, respectively.
