Recorded monuments
- MA022-022001 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, located on the level top of hillock in undulating terrain broken by rock outcropping and terracing. The location provides extensive views, particularly to N across Killala Bay, the S shore of which lies c. 100m to N. Immediately to S is an expanse of land traditionally known as the Battlefield of Moyne (MA022-023----). A flat, oval area (19.9m NE–SW; 15.6m NW–SE), encompassing the entire top of the hillock, is defined on the perimeter by a low scarp (Wth slope c. 3.5m; H c. 1.2m at NW). The scarp is poorly defined, and in parts merges almost seamlessly with the slope of the hillock, which is c. 3.5m in height. There is a standing stone (MA022-022002-) in the NE quadrant of the interior. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 April 2019
- MA022-022002 Standing stone
Description
In the NE quadrant of a rath (MA022-022001-). Upright slab (0.67m; 0.32m; H 1.95m) with long axis oriented NNW–SSE. The stone leans slightly to W. It narrows slightly both in width and thickness towards the top, and when viewing the broad face, the top of the stone slopes up obliquely to a point. A slight depression encircles the base of the stone caused by cattle using the stone as a rubbing post. A few small stones protrude from this depression. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 April 2019
- MA022-046 Barrow - embanked barrow
Description
In gently undulating pasture, located on a natural rise/low hillock. There are good views of the surrounding countryside, with the Ox Mountains stretching to SE, and the summit of Nephin Mountain visible to SSW. An embankment for a defunct branch-line of the Great Western Railway lies immediately to SW, truncating the base of the rise. This possible embanked barrow is not indicated on the 1838 OS-6-inch map, but is shown on the 1929 edition. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 11m) defined by a low, sod-covered earthen bank (Wth 1.4m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.2m at SE). The bank appears to incorporate some stone. It is low and degraded, and at W–N is reduced to a scarp. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 May 2019
