- MA103-031 Ringfort - rath
Description
In poor-average, rush-grown pasture, now converted to forestry, with rising ground to S. Views northwards are good over a broad sweep of lowlying pasture and bog. There is a field drain/stream c. 12m to E. Slightly raised oval area (34m N−S; 25m E−W) defined by a scarp (H 0.6m at S, 1.3m at N), outside which is a fosse evident as a shallow depression (Wth 2.8m). There is a break (Wth 1-1.5m) in the scarp at S, obscured by overgrowth. A causeway (Wth 4m) crosses the fosse at NNE, the E side of which merges with a low scarp, possibly a relict field fence, which extends to N beyond the rath. A low roughly circular rise (diam. 8-9m) is evident in the NE quadrant of the interior; it has a marked slope on the N side, but in general its perimeter is poorly defined, merging almost seamlessly with surrounding flat interior ground surface. A field fence on a roughly N−S axis overlies the rath scarp at W. Grass-covered, with clumps of gorse and few hawthorn trees in the interior and around the perimeter. A rath (MA103-032----) is located 230m to NE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 11 November 2022
- MA103-032 Ringfort - rath
Description
In average pasture, sited at the E end of a terrace, on a N-facing slope which falls to an expanse of wet boggy pasture. There are excellent views, blocked now to W by forestry plantation. This large, oval embanked enclosure, most likely a rath, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. It survives as a slightly raised area (65.5m E−W; 41m N−S), ovoid in plan, defined on the W half by a bank/scarp with a broad, low inner lip (Wth c. 4.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 2.05m), outside which it is enclosed by a well defined fosse (Wth 2.8m at base), with an external bank (Wth 5.5m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1.5m) which is best preserved at W−N. On the E half, the enclosing elements have been levelled to low undulations. A slight rise is evident in the base of the fosse at S, possibly the remnant of a causeway. The central part of the interior is raised, possibly encompassing a natural rise, with a slope down towards the perimeter. The slope is steepest and broadest at NE−E, with a drop in height from centre to perimeter of c. 2m. A field fence crosses the enclosure to W of centre. A small quarry pit cuts into a portion of the fosse and external bank at W, and the inner bank/scarp is disturbed at N. A field fence with contiguous field drain skirts around the NE side of the enclosure in a broad arc. A fulacht fia (MA103-076----) lies immediately N of this fence, c. 10m N of the rath. The rath is grass cover, with the perimeter on W arc ringed with gorse. Another rath (MA103-032----) is located 230m to NE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 11 November 2022
- MA103-076 Burnt mound
Description
In pasture, located at the base of a N-facing slope, on top of which a rath (MA103-032----) is located. An expanse of lowlying boggy pasture stretches to N. Low, flat-topped, roughly oval or oblong mound (10m N–S; c. 6.5m E–W; H 0.2m), which appears to be composed of shattered stone fragments in a black, charcoal-rich soil. There is a shallow slightly sunken indentation (2m E−W; 1.8m N−S) towards the N end of the E side, but it is not clear if this represents a trough hollow. The W edge of the mound is indistinct, and the S side is bordered by a partly silted up, vegetation-clogged field drain. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 23 November 2022
