Description
Located on a low rise in average pasture. Good views. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 25m); by the time of the 1916 edition it has been greatly modified by incorporation at W, NW and NE into a system of later field fences. Irregular-shaped, slightly raised area (c. 41m E−W; c. 45m N−S) defined at S−W by remnants of a curving scarp (H 1.4m). It is defined at NW and NE by straight sides formed by stone field fences, now low and ruined. The E−SE side of the enclosure is greatly disturbed and partly quarried out. At E there is a very short length of bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.9m) with possible fosse (Wth 1.7m) and external bank (Wth 1.5-2m; H 0.2-0.4m), but it is unclear to what extent these are remnants of primary features or later field fences. In the interior a spine of level ground extends NNW−SSE through the centre with a marked slope from there down to E. An enclosure (MA103-025----) and a possible enclosure (MA103-025001-) are 260m to NNE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 November 2022
- MA103-025 Enclosure
Description
In pasture, located on top of a broad, elongated flat-topped ridge, with very good views in all directions over the surrounding undulating grassland intermixed with expanses of bog. An embanked enclosure (diam. 35-40m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. There is no visible trace of this enclosure on the flat top of the ridge which encompasses an area of c. 50m E–W by c. 40m N–S. There is a small enclosure (MA103-025001-) downslope on the SW slope of the ridge, and a rath (MA103-024----) is located 260m to SSW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 November 2022
- MA103-025001 Enclosure
Description
In pasture, located on a gently slope at the SW edge of a broad, flat-topped ridge on which an enclosure (MA103-025----), now levelled, is sited. Not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Poorly preserved outline of a subcircular area (8m N-S; 8.8m E-W) defined by a narrow, sod-covered stony bank (Wth 0.7m; H 0.2m, 0.45m on downslope S side). There is a broad gap (Wth 4.8m) in the bank at W. The interior is not noticeably raised. A slight scarp curving from the gap at W to the bank at S marks a shallow sunken area (3-4m across; D 0.15-0.2m) in the SW quadrant. The nature and date of this enclosure is uncertain. A rath (MA103-024----) is located 260m to SSW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 November 2022
