• MA050-015001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise, with a more pronounced slope at W–NW. Overlooked at SW by a higher hill. Another rath (MA050-016----) is visible on a knoll 350m to SE. Raised oval earthen platform (50.5m N–S; c. 37m E–W) defined by a substantial scarp (Wth slope 1.5m at SE, 3.8m at NW; ext. H 0.55m at SE, 2.1m at NW), which is markedly steeper on the W half. On the E half, the scarp is faced externally by a rough wall of jumbled stone, which appears to be of recent date. Two roughly parallel ‘walls’ or linear heaps (Wth 1.4-1.7m; H 0.3m) of stone extend N–S for several meters through the interior. Both consist of low, rough jumbles of stone, without evident structure, and it is unclear if they are ruined walls representing internal divisions/structures, or merely the result of field clearance. The E ‘wall’ has an expanded terminal at N end, which curves slightly to E. The other W ‘wall’ appears to bifurcate at its N end, curving for a short distance both to E and W. O'Hara (1991, 137, no. 39) recorded a souterrain (MA050-015002-) and a circular house (MA050-015003-) in the interior; no trace of either is now evident. The perimeter is ringed with hawthorn and brambles; the interior largely grassy, but with clumps of hawthorn, ferns and irises. • MA050-016001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, in an area of undulating grassland, straddling a rise on the W end of an E–W ridge, with a steep fall of ground on the S W and N sides, and a more gradual slope to E along the spine of the ridge. Views are especially extensive to W and N. Raths (MA050-017----; MA050-015----) are visible 250m to ENE and 330m to NW respectively. Raised roughly circular area (20.7m N–S; 23.7m E–W) defined by a scarp (H 2.5-3m at N and S, 0.95-1m at E and W), which is topped by a low spread (Wth c. 2m) of stones. In parts, the stones appear to be remnants of a wall, and at W a length of internal stone facing (H 0.2m) is visible. Whether the wall is a primary feature is, however, unclear. Elsewhere, at E and NW, piles of stones topping the scarp appear to be the result of relatively recent field clearance. At NW–NE the scarp is incorporated into a later field fence. A low area (Wth 3.3m) in the scarp at E may mark an original entrance. The interior gives the impression of being gently domed in profile, with a slight more marked slope from centre down to S, an effect reinforced by the natural contours of the ridge and the pronounced natural fall of ground to N and S. There is a souterrain (MA050-016002) in the centre of the interior. No evidence was found of a possible house (MA050-016003-) noted in the interior by O’Hara (1991, 138, no. 40).   Description

  In a rath (MA050-016001-). There is a roughly square depression (8.7m E–W; 7.8m N–S; D 0.45m) in the centre of the rath. A number of large stones protruding from the base of the depression on its E side, and on the S side there is a lintelled opening (Wth 1.05m; H 0.4m) to a souterrain passage of drystone construction. • MA050-017 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, straddles the S-facing side of roughly E–W ridge, overlooking gently undulating grassland to S and W. At NE–E the ground falls away to tracts of bog. Raised circular area (25m E–W; 23.8m N–S) defined by a scarp (ext. H 1.1-1.5m) topped by a low jumble (Wth 1.4m) of stones. At N the scarp retains a slightly raised internal rim suggesting remnants of a bank of width c. 3m. At the base of the scarp, a field fence (Wth 1.3m; H c. 0.6m) of earth and stone, largely engulfed in overgrowth, encloses the rath NE–S–NW. A low area (Wth 2m) in the scarp at E may mark the original entrance, but is largely blocked externally by overgrowth and field clearance debris. The interior is level. It is bisected, slightly E of centre, on a N–S axis by an earth and stone field fence. The perimeter thickly ringed by hawthorn and blackthorn. A farm track, on a roughly NE–SW axis, lies immediately to N of the rath. There is a rath (MA050-016001----) 250m to WSW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 12 June 2020
