- MA071-124 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, located on a rise in undulating terrain. Views are extensive to N−SE. Ground rises gently to SW. There is a stream 150m to W. Substantially raised subcircular area or platform (26.5m N−S; 24.6m E−W) defined by a scarp (H 1.8-2m) which is consistently high around the circuit. The scarp is incorporated into a field fence at NNW−NE but retains its curve. Elsewhere the scarp has a very vertical external face, probably a modification dating to the modern era, and is engulfed in brambles. The interior slopes gently down to ESE. There is no obvious entrance; eroded sections of the scarp at E and NW are used by cattle. Animal burrow are evident in the SW and NE quadrants. Another rath (MA 071-123----) is located 290m to NW. - MA071-149 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, located on a ridge at the break of slope on the E side, overlooking a flat valley of wet pasture beyond which a parallel ridge rises. Slightly raised circular area (35.5m N−S; 34m E−W) defined at S−NNE by an earthen bank and at NE−SE by a substantial scarp enhanced by the natural fall of ground. A fosse is indicated outside the scarp at SE−W on the 1931 OS 6-inch maps, but this is no longer clearly defined on the ground. The bank (Wth 5m; 3.5m at NNE; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.3m at W, 1.1m at NNE) is rather low, with a broad slump, especially at W. In parts, it rises to a narrow peak at top, giving it an almost triangular profile. Stones protrude from the sod along its top. A semicircular portion (12m NE−SW; 6m NW−SE) of the scarp and interior has been quarried out at SE. Immediately outside the scarp at E−SE there is a narrow terrace defined on its outer edge by a low scarp (H 0.8m) –this might be the remnant of a field boundary or possibly of an original outer enclosing element. A gap (Wth 4m) intervenes between the rath and remnants of a curving field fence which skirted the rath at SW; this may preserve the outline of an external fosse. The rath interior has a very slight slope down to E. A boulder is embedded in the ground in the SE quadrant. There is a break (Wth 3m) in the bank at N. A field fence on a NE−SW axis clips the rath scarp at SE−S. Another rath (MA071-150----) is located 130m to SSE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 September 2021
- MA071-150 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, located on a rise in undulating terrain. It is overlooked by a rath (MA071-151----) located on the summit of a prominent hillock 130m to SSE, and another rath (MA071-149----) is visible 130m to NNW. There is a stream/drain 240m to S, with which the townland boundary coincides. Raised circular area (35m NNW−SSE; 32m ENE−WSW) defined at ENE−W by a scarp (H 2.2; Wth slope 3m, at E; H 1.4m at W), levelled at WNW−NE to a low undulation (H 0.6m). A field fence, with parallel field ditch, on a ENE−WSW axis crosses the rath roughly centrally. To N of the fence, the rath has been levelled but its outline can still be traced. To S of the field fence, the rath remains quite well preserved. The interior is level, grassy and featureless. The scarp on the S half is engulfed in gorse. - MA071-151 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, prominently sited on the top of steep-sided hillock, with an especially abrupt drop is abrupt at SW−W. The location commands excellent views in all directions over gently undulating, wettish grassland. It overlooks another rath (MA071-150----) located on a rise 130m to NNW. A stream/drain, with which the townland boundary coincides, skirts the hillock at S. There is a tract of forestry c. 80m to SW. Raised oval area (32m NE−SW; 36.7m NW−SE) defined by a substantial scarp (H 2.8m at NE which retains a slight internal lip (int. H 0.3m). The height of the scarp is enhanced by the steep slope of the hillock. There is a shallow depression (Wth 1.6-2.6m; D 0.4m) immediately outside the scarp at WSW−N, which may be the remnant of a fosse or related to the incorporation of the rath into a system of field fences in the modern era. The interior is slightly higher in the NW quadrant. There is no clearly defined entrance –a low area in the scarp to NW (W1.4m) is used by cattle to access the interior. The interior is grassy; the perimeter on the S arc is densely covered in gorse. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 September 2021
