• MA063-014 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise, with a stream/drain at the base of the S-facing slope c. 30m to S. It is not indicated on 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is shown as a hachured circular enclosure on 1920 edition. Circular area (26.4m N–S; 26-28m E–W) enclosed by a low rise/scarp (ext. H 0.6m at SW, 1.4m at NW), which is incorporated into a roughly E–W field wall at N. The interior has been extensively quarried out to a depth of c. 2m below the perimeter. A large heap of stones is piled in the NW quadrant. Ash and sycamore trees grow throughout the interior, and the perimeter is ringed with hawthorn. To N of the field boundary which overlies the bank there is a large sunken area which suggests that the natural rise was quarried out here too. • MA063-015 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  In a thicket of overgrowth at the N end of a pasture field. There is a stream c. 80m to E. Circular area (estimated diam. 25-30m) defined by a stone bank, incorporated into later field walls at S, W and N. The interior is not noticeably raised relative to exterior ground level. It is defined at S–SW by a stone bank (Wth 2.5-3m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.8m), and at WSW-N by a drystone wall (Wth 1.5m; H 1m), which appears to be a field wall; at NE–SE it is defined by a low stony rise, and at S the perimeter is incorporated into a later field wall. Immediately outside the stone bank at SE, a shallow depression (Wth 2.5m) is evident, with a hint of a rise on its outer edge. It is unclear if these features are evidence of a fosse and external bank. There is a local tradition of a souterrain (MA063-015001-) and a children’s burial ground (MA063-015002-) in the interior. The interior is densely covered in brambles and ferns, and the perimeter is ringed with hazel, hawthorn and sycamore. Overgrowth impeded inspection.   Description

  In a cashel (MA063-015----). The interior of the cashel was used as a children’s burial ground (pers. comm. Jimmy Tarpy, 2014). It is thought that the burials were in the S half of the interior, but it is not possible to identify graves amongst the loose stones and overgrowth that cover the interior. • MA063-016 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In rough pasture, broken by rock outcropping. Views good but not extensive, best to NW. Slightly raised, roughly circular area (29m N–S; c. 28m E–W) defined by remnants of a stone bank, incorporated into or truncated by later field walls. At SW–N the stone bank is evidentt as a low, slumped sod-covered stony rise/scarp (Wth c. 3m; ext. H 0.6m). At NE–E it is overlain or truncated by a later linear field wall on a NW–SE axis. At SE a slight stony rise (Wth 1.4-2m; H 0.3-0.5m) is evident; at S–SW it is incorporated into a later wall (Wth 0.7m; H 1m), which respects its curve. The location of the original entrance is not obvious. The interior level and grassy; there are relict cultivation ridges on a N−S axis. In the N half, there is a sod-covered heap (c. 4m across; H c. 0.5m) of stones, most likely a field clearance heap.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, extant 1914, on a rectangular plan. For sale, 2009. Pitched slate roof with roll moulded clay ridge tiles centred on paired cement rendered, ruled and lined chimney stacks having corbelled stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, decorative timber bargeboards to gables on timber purlins, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined walls with rusticated rendered piers to ends. Central door opening not visible. Square-headed window openings with concrete sills[?], and moulded rendered surrounds framing one-over-one timber sash windows having part exposed sash boxes. Set in landscaped grounds on a corner site with rendered piers to perimeter having ivy-covered gabled capping.
