Description
In pasture, located on a rise, with extensive views E−W overlooking an expanse of gently undulating grassland and bog. Raised oval area (30 N−S; 35.5m E−W) defined SSE−WNW by an earthen bank, reduced at NNW−SE to an earthen scarp which retains a slight internal lip in parts. The bank on the S−W arc has been adapted to serve as a field fence, and later field fences abut the rath at SE, S, SW and NW. In the N half of the interior there is a slight slope down from centre to N. A low, ruined earth and stone field fence (Wth 0.8m; H 0.2m), on a roughly N−S axis, cuts through the rath to E of centre. Current access to the interior is through a gap (Wth 1.2m) at SE, and there a number of narrow breaks eroded by cattle in the bank at N and E. The perimeter is thickly ringed with hawthorn, blackthorn and hazel. The interior is grassy, with encroachment of blackthorn in the SE quadrant. Description
In pasture, located on a ridge, close to the break of slope at the SE side, overlooking lowlying damp ground to SE, rising ground to S and expanses of bog to SW and W. This possible rath is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular embanked enclosure; by the time of the 1930 edition it has been subsumed into a system of later field boundaries defining a network of small subrectangular walled fields, now encroached on by blackthorn scrub Slightly raised, roughly subcircular area (31.5m E−W; c. 30m N−S) defined by an earth and stone field fence, which may preserve an original bank; it is largely concealed by overgrowth and difficult to examine. A short length of drystone wall defines the N−NNE arc. Gaps at N (Wth 2.5m) and SW (Wth 2m) now allow tractor access to the interior. A low E−W field fence crosses the interior to S of centre. Description
In pasture, located on a ridge, at the break of slope on the SW side where there is a steep fall of ground, overlooking an expanse of damp ground. Raised circular area (35.2m N−S; 34m E−W) defined by earthen scarp (Wth slope 2.8m at SE; ext. H 1.4m at NE, 1.8m SE) which retains a slight internal lip in parts. Stones protrude from the scarp intermittently, and at SSW−N the scarp is incorporated into a field fence and externally faced with stone. Heaps of field clearance stones are piled against the exterior of the scarp at SE and S. The interior has a slight slope down from N−S in the S third. The rath perimeter is thickly ringed with hazel, hawthorn and blackthorn; long grass and bracken in the interior. A rath (MA072-070----) is located on another ridge 190m to SW. Description
In pasture, located on a rise, with good views; overlooking lowlying damp ground to SW. Raised oval area (c. 35m NW−SE; c. 25m NE−SW) defined by a scarp. Stone facing is evident on the scarp (H 1.45m) at E. At N−E large boulders and field clearance debris are piled against the external slope of the scarp. The scarp (H 1.1m) on the S−W is cut to the vertical, dropping to a terrace bordered on its outer edge by a field wall (W 0.7m; ext. H 0.8m). Inspection was difficult: The perimeter is thickly ringed with hazel and hawthorn, and the interior is obscured by an impenetrable tangle of brambles and thorn bushes. Heaps of stones (max. dims. 2-6m) can be glimpsed beneath the overgrowth. Raths (MA072-068001-; MA072-071----; MA072-073----; MA072-074----) are located 282m to NE; 190m to SW and 275m to SE, 360m to ENE, respectively. Description
In pasture, located on a rise. There is a stream 130m to NE. Slightly raised oval area (c. 28m E−W; 36m NNE−SSW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 1.1m at NW, 1.6m at SE). The bank on the E arc has a broad external slope and a low stony internal rim. On the W arc it has been modified to serve as a field fence and here its external face is cut the vertical and faced with stones. There is a gap (Wth 1.8m) at SSE, flanked by two boulders, possibly an original entrance. The interior slopes down gently from centre to E and SE. The W half is obscured by blackthorn scrub. The perimeter is densely ringed with hawthorn, blackthorn and ash trees. There is a rath (MA072-072----) 275m to NW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 12 May 2021
