• MA071-144 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In improved pasture, on a low rise with a gentle fall of ground to NNE. Overlooked by a ridge on which two other raths (MA071-145----) and (MA071-146----) are located 120m and 135m to NNE, respectively. Ground dips into a shallow wet area to SE. This possible rath is shown as a subcircular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps. It has been levelled, but a slight oval rise (c. 30m N–S; c. 20m E–W) is still visible. It is outlined by a cropmark in the form of a band (Wth 2–2.3m) of short, pale-green grass, most clearly defined on the S arc, which most likely represents a levelled bank or wall. • MA071-145 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on top of a ridge with a gentle fall of ground immediately to NW, providing good views SW−NE. At ESE ground level rises slightly towards the summit of the ridge. Roughly circular area (diam. 23-25m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.9m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 0.85m, at E) which has been modified and incorporated into a later system of field walls. The bank is thickly ringed with hawthorn and blackthorn trees and the rath interior is engulfed in an impenetrable thicket of blackthorn. A field wall on a NW−SE axis crosses the interior to SW of centre. There is a possible rath (MA071-144----) 125m to SW and a rath (MA071-146----) 80m to NE. • MA071-146 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located just below the highest point on a ridge, close to a gradual fall of ground at NW–NE which provides are good views, especially to NE over a valley of damp pasture. Immediately to SSE−SSW ground rises gently along the spine of the ridge. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 35m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. By the time of the 1931 edition, the rath has been encircled by a later field boundary and only the NE arc of the enclosing bank is depicted with hachuring. It has been levelled. Ephemeral surface undulations can be traced in a broad curve (diam. 25-30m N−S) at N−SW. The interior ground surface has an uneven, disturbed appearance. An opening to a souterrain (MA071-146001) is located in a slightly raised area, roughly NE of centre. There is a rath (MA071-145-----) 80m to SW and a possible rath (MA071-144----) 235m to SW. • MA071-146001 Souterrain
  Description

  In a rath (MA071-146----). The rath has been levelled and the interior area has been greatly disturbed. A raised area roughly NE of centre has been partly dug away exposing a lintelled opening (Wth 0.86m; H 0.25m) to a souterrain passage (Wth 1.05m) of dry-stone construction with lintel roofing. The passage extends to WNW for several meters but then is blocked with collapsed earth. A possible creepway opening to SW is visible at the point of blockage. • MA071-178 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture in undulating terrain, located at a break of slope where the ground falls gently towards the Trimoge River c. 165m to S. Slightly raised circular area (c. 35m N–S) defined by a bank (Wth 2.3m, int. H 0.55m; ext. H 1m), outside which it is enclosed by a fosse (Wth 3m) with an outer bank (at WNW: Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 0.45m). The inner bank has a rather low internal rim. It is topped with a thin loose jumble of stones, and has stone tumble on its slopes. The fosse is broad and flat-based at NE−S, bordered on its outer edge by the outer bank which has been subsumed N–S into a later field wall. On the W half, however, the fosse is narrow and shallow (Wth 1m) with a low bank on its outer edge, outside which is another fosse/gap (Wth 1.3m) with a field fence on its outer edge –it is unclear to what extent the difference in the outer enclosing features between the E and W halves of the rath are the result of modification of the rath in the modern era. The entrance gap (Wth 2m) in the inner bank at E has a facing of stone slabs, which extends for 1.5m across the fosse, splaying outwards slightly. A stone kerb also continues along the inner edge of the bank for a short distance on either side of the entrance. The corresponding gap in the outer bank is blocked by a later field wall. The interior has a gentle slope down from S of centre to S. In the W half, beneath a thicket of blackthorn and brambles, an area of disturbance is visible, marked by several small quarry pits (diam. 3-4m; D 0.5-0.6m) with additional disturbance caused by badger sets. At the SW of this area, there is a depression (Wth 2m; D 0.2-0.4m) with a number of large stones and slabs protruding from, or lying on the base. This may indicate a collapsed souterrain (MA071-178001-). Both banks are ringed with hawthorn, hazel and lime trees; blackthorn scrub and brambles cover the interior. • MA071-178001 Souterrain
  Description

  Located in the SW quadrant of a rath (MA071-178----), in an area of disturbance marked by small quarry pits and badger sets, there is a sunken area (Wth 2m; D 0.2-0.4m) which may be the location of a souterrain. • MA071-191 Enclosure
  Description

  In lowlying, somewhat neglected pasture. Views are fairly good, especially towards a ridge to NE. There is a derelict farmstead to WSW. Not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch mapping. Listed in the SMR (1991) and the RMP (1997) as a possible enclosure on the basis of an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 688 -7; Roll 217, pr. 35). This partly levelled enclosure consists of a roughly circular area (diam. c. 16m) defined by a fosse (Wth 2.5m at N, 3m at S; D 0.5-0.7m) evident as a shallow depression, most clearly defined on the SW arc. There is a discrete length of stony bank (L 2m; Wth 1.5-2m; H 0.5-1m) on the inner edge of the fosse at SW which might be the remnant of an enclosing bank but this is very uncertain. Immediately outside the fosse at NW there is a slight rise/cropmark (rougher vegetation), possibly the remnant of an outer bank but again this is very uncertain and it cannot be traced elsewhere. A roughly circular depression (diam. c. 4m; D 0.4m) is dug into the N sector of the interior, with a similar stony hollow, slightly smaller and shallower, immediately to S.   Description

  Three-arch road bridge over river, extant 1838. "Repaired". Part ivy-covered random rubble limestone walls centred on triangular cutwaters to piers to upriver (south) elevation on shuttered concrete bases having rendered pyramidal capping with lichen-covered rough hewn limestone coping to parapets. Series of three segmental arches with repointed cut-limestone voussoirs. Sited spanning Trimoge River with unkempt banks to river.
