- MA038-033 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, on a low rise, in an area of undulating grassland. The Deel River, which marks the N boundary of the townland, is located 20m to N. Raised oval area (41.6m E–W; 32m N–S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 2.2m, at N). The bank is best defined on the W half, with remnants of internal stone facing evident in parts. Stone facing on the external face of the bank at S–SW appears to be the result of incorporation of that section of the bank into a later NW–SE field boundary. There are numerous gaps in the bank, including a break (Wth 1.8m) at ENE, and a break (Wth 2.4m) at SSW; these appear to be the result of erosion by farm stock, and it is not possible to pinpoint the original entrance. The interior has a slight slope down to E. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 July 2019
- MA038-034 Ringfort - rath
Description
In undulating average pasture, located on a rise or low ridge, with a fall of ground to SE overlooking an area of wettish pasture. This rath is named ‘Rathmacostello’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a raised circular area (28m E–W; 27.3m N–S) defined by a bank, with remnants of an external bank survive at SE–SW. The inner bank (Wth 4.3m at NW, 3.4m at SE; int. H 0.7m at NW, 0.35m at SE; ext. H 1.45m at NW, 1.55m at SE) is largely earthen but incorporate some stone. On the inner face at NW–N stones appear to be regularly set, suggesting the remnants of a kerb. The bank is generally low internally, especially at E–S, but it retains a well defined external slope. An external bank (Wth 2.6m; int. H 0.4m) survives in an arc at SE–SW, coinciding with the natural break of slope of the ridge. It has been removed elsewhere, but a slight undulation can still be traced, outlining its original circuit W–NE. It is shown on the 1922 OS 6-inch map as a field boundary that encircles the rath, from which other field boundaries radiate to NE and SW. A broad, flat intervening gap (Wth 5m) intervenes between it and the inner bank. The gap does not resemble a fosse, and while a fosse may have existed, no surface depression or crop mark is evident to highlight its presence. It is possible that the external bank is a later feature rather than a primary enclosing feature of the rath. The interior of the rath is level and featureless. There is a break (Wth 1.8m) in the bank at NE. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 July 2019
- MA038-177 Fulacht fia
Description
In pasture, in a sheltered damp location immediately to E of a spring, which rises at the base of a slope and flows 15m to N to join the Deel River. Ground rises gently to S. This fulacht fia consists of a well-defined, compact grass-covered semi-circular mound (13m N-S; 11.50m E-W; H 0.4m at S, 1.4m at N). It is composed of heat-shattered sandstone fragments in charcoal-rich soil. A shallow depression on the W side, facing the spring, indicates the likely position of a trough. A fulacht fia (MA038-178----) is located 7m to W on the opposite side of the spring, and a burnt mound (MA038-179----) is 22m to NW. A rath (MA038-033----) is located 15m upslope to S, on top of low rise Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 August 2019
- MA038-178 Fulacht fia
Description
In pasture, in a sheltered damp location on the W side of a spring that rises at the base of a slope and flows into the River Deel 15m to N. This fulacht fia is evident as an elongated, roughly crescent-shaped mound (c. 13m NE-SW; c. 6m NW-SE; H 0.4m) of shattered sandstone in charcoal-rich soil. The curve of the mound encompasses a slight depression on the W side, which may be the location of a trough. The E side of the mound is incorporated into the line of a field bank on N-S axis. Past disturbance to the mound has given it a somewhat irregular shape, and its exact original plan and extend are uncertain. It is covered in mossy sod and heather. Another fulacht fia (MA038-176----) is located 7m to E, on the opposite side of the spring, and a burnt mound (MA038-179---) is 15m to NW. There is a rath (MA038-033----) is 15m upslope to S. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 August 2019
- MA038-179 Burnt mound
Description
In pasture, located on NW edge of a depression of wet ground on the S side of the River Deel. This burnt mound is evident as a sod-covered subcircular heap (diam. c. 3m; H 0.5m) of burnt stone and charcoal-rich soil. The nature of this small mound is uncertain: it may be the in situ remnants of a damaged fulacht fia or it may be displaced material dumped at this location during land reclamation works. Two fulachtai fia (MA038-178----; (MA038-177----) are located 15m and 22m to SE, respectively. A rath (MA038-033) is located c. 30m to S on rising ground.
