• MA038-073 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, straddling a rise in undulating terrain, with a gradual fall of ground to E– SE, and a slight fall to N. Slightly raised circular area (21.2m N–S; 23m E–W) defined by a bank of earth and stone. The bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 0.4m, at W) is best preserved on the W half of the rath; elsewhere a low stony bank (Wth 1.6-2m) tops the earthen scarp, reduced at SE–S to a scarp only. There is a more substantial external slope (H 1.4-1.5m) at E–SE to compensate for the natural fall of ground. There is a gap (Wth 1.4m) in the bank at SW. A heap of stones is piled against the external face of the bank at NE. At S the scarp is clipped by a later E–W field wall. A NW–SE field wall, shown on the 1922 OS 6-inch map, which abutted the bank at NW, has been removed. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 August 2019

• MA038-074 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on a ridge with a fall of ground to NE, with good views, especially to N–NE, over sharply undulating terrain. This possible rath is shown on the 1922 OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 30-35m). It has been levelled. The outline of a circular area (diam. c. 20-25m) is barely discernible. • MA038-075 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, straddling the SE side of a rise in gently undulating terrain, with very good views. Named 'Skehanagh Fort' on the 1838 ad 1922 OS 6-inch maps, this rath consists of a raised, roughly circular area (37.8m E–W; 35m N–S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5m, 6.8m at W; int. H 0.4m, 1.1m at W; ext. H 1.8m at N, 1.55m at W). It is built up on the S half to compensate for the natural fall of ground. The bank is best preserved on the W half of the rath, where it has a broad internal and external slump. Elsewhere it has a low internal face, especially degraded at S, but the external slope remains quite substantial. At N–SE a later field wall has been built against the external face of the bank, respecting its curve. There are several narrow eroded gaps or low areas, but no clearly defined entrance feature. A slight rise is evident in the centre of the interior, from which there is a gently slope to S. Cultivation ridges on a roughly E–W axis traverse the interior, and slightly to N of centre there is a low oblong heap (6m E–W; 3-4m N–S; H 0.4m) of stones. • MA038-075001 Children's burial ground
  Description

  In a rath (MA038-075). According to local tradition, the interior of the rath was used as a children’s burial ground. Slightly to N of centre there is a low oblong heap (6m E–W; 3-4m N–S; H 0.4m) of stones, possibly marking a grave. However, it may simply be a clearance cairn associated with cultivation ridges which traverse the rath interior on a roughly E–W axis. • MA038-076 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise in gently undulating terrain. Circular area (21m E–W; 21m N–S) enclosed by a substantial stone bank (Wth 6m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1m) evident as a broad, partly sod-covered spread of stones. At NNW a short section of drystone walling is visible on the inner face, suggesting that the stone bank is the remains of a collapsed wall. The interior is relatively level and not noticeably raised above exterior ground level. There is a gap (Wth 3.7m) in the stone bank at N. The enclosure was incorporated into a system of later field walls, one of which on a roughly E–W axis bisects the S half of the interior. Walls which intersected with the enclosure at N and S, have been removed. The perimeter ringed with hawthorn and scrub.
