- MA071-072 Ringfort - rath
Description
In rough to average pasture, located on top of a rise, with a fall of ground to NW, overlooking an expanse of lowlying wet ground. There is undulating/rising ground to E and SE. Oval platform (34m NE−SW; 24. 3m NW−SE) defined by a scarp (H 2m), outside which it is encircled by a fosse (Wth 5m) and external bank (Wth 5.5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.2m, at SW). The fosse and external bank are well preserved at S−NW, with a number of large stones the external bank incorporates at W. At NW−NE the fosse and external bank are reduced to a terrace (Wth 6.8m) defined on its outer edge by a scarp (H 1.2m). A field fence on a NW−SE axis overlies the fosse and truncates the external bank at NE−E. At E−SE the platform scarp has been adapted to serve as a field fence and the fosse and external bank are not evident. The scarp is lowest (H 0.6m) at NE where it faces the spine of the ridge; this is a likely location for the original entrance. The interior is level. There is a low stony heap (max. dim. 2m; H 0.3m) in the N half. A shallow roughly square depression (2m by 2m) abuts the scarp at W. The perimeter is thickly ringed with blackthorn bushes, which are encroaching on the grassy interior at S and W. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 August 2021
- MA071-073 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, in the grounds of Carrowgowan House, a 19th-century house now razed to the ground. The ringfort is sited on a N-S ridge, affording good views along a stream valley to W−NW and of the surrounding undulating pastureland at S−NW. Modern houses lie immediately to SE and S of the rath. Raised circular area (34.2m N-S; 33.2m E-W) defined by an earthen bank, outside which it is enclosed at NE−WSW by remnants of a fosse (Wth 2.5m at SW) and outer bank (Wth 5m; int. H 0.3m; 1.6m at SW). The inner bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 2.2m at SW) retains a low internal lip at NE−SW but is elsewhere reduced to a scarp. The height of the bank is enhanced at SW−NW by the natural fall of the ridge slope. The outer bank is overlain or truncated by later field boundaries at NE-SSW, but a short section remains well defined at SSW−WSW. The interior is level and grassy, with a few ash trees. The entrance may have been at ENE where the scarp is lowest and there is a gap (2.7m) in the inner bank. A gap (Wth 2.2m) at NNE appears to be recent. A stone-built belvedere, undoubtedly contemporary with Carrowgowan House, stands at the SW edge of the interior. It is oval in plan (int. 1.55m E-W; 2.3m N-S; wall T 0.6m) with three pointed-arch windows and two flat-headed windows, a flat-topped doorway, a small fireplace and dovecote niches in the upper courses of the interior wall face. The windows have brick surrounds. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 August 2021
- MA071-074 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, prominently sited on a ridge overlooking a broad expanse of lowlying, damp pasture. Ground falls away steeply immediately to N−NE of the enclosure. This possible rath is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m); it is shown as an oblong hachured enclosure (c. 60m N-S; c. 30m E-W) on the 1931 edition. It has been levelled. The outline of a roughly circular flat area (c. 26m NE–SW; c. 28m NW–SE) is defined by a slight undulation/cropmark: An encircling band (Wth c. 4m) of yellowish grass, sloping outwards slightly, probably indicates a levelled bank or scarp, and outside that a band of richer, green grass -clearest on the W arc -is suggestive of an external fosse. The E edge of the enclosure has been dug away and a field fence on a NNE−SSW axis lies immediately to E. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 August 2021
- MA071-075 Enclosure
Description
In rough pasture, located on a low SE-facing slope overlooking an expanse of lowlying damp pasture. A circular ringfort-sized enclosure (diam. c. 25m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. When inspected in 1998, an impenetrable thicket of blackthorn (diam. 20-30m) covers this location and prevented examination. A field boundary on a roughly NW−SE axis crosses the location.
