Description
On a slight rise in a low-lying landscape. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 37m E-W; 36.4m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.4-5.4m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.2-0.4m) SE-W-NE, and a fosse (Wth of base 3.5m; D 0.1m) NW-NNE. There is no identifiable original entrance. Rath (RO039-005003-) is c. 170m to the SSW. - RO038-005003 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a slight rise of a gentle SE-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 42.4m N-S; 39.8m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.3-2.6m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 0.3m) WNW-E and S-WSW, which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.7m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance, and relict field banks (RO038-004005-) attach to the perimeter at S and NW. A bank extends W (L c. 50m) from the perimeter of the rath at SW and another bank extends S (L c. 20m) from the same point before turning E (L c. 50m). From the perimeter at NW a bank extends N (L c. 50m) and another bank runs W (L c. 30m) from this, c. 10m from the rath. Test trenches (96E0075) conducted c. 100m to the W failed to reveal any associated features (Ryan 1997c). Rath (RO038-005001-) is c. 170m to the NNE. Description
Relict field banks attach to the perimeter of rath (RO038005003-) at S and NW. A bank extends W (L c. 50m) from the perimeter of the rath at SW and another bank extends S (L c. 20m) from the same point before turning E (L c. 50m). From the perimeter at NW a bank extends N (L c. 50m) and another bank runs W (L c. 30m) from this, c. 10m from the rath. Field system (RO038-005006-) further E may be part of this system. Description
In a low-lying level landscape with rock outcrop. An area of c. 30 ha (c. 75 acres) contains a field system defined by earthen banks (Wth c. 2m; H 0.3-0.5m). The fields are large (dims c. 50m x c. 100m) and may be unrelated to two raths (RO038-005001-; RO038-005003-) and their related field system (RO038-005005-). At the centre of this system is a series of five smaller rectangular enclosures (dims 30-40m x 40-60m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 2.5m; H 0.3-0.7m) and silted drains. A house site (RO038-005008-) (int. dims 6.8m N-S; 3.3m E-W) defined by earthen banks (Wth 1.6-2.8m; H 0.2-0.3m) with doorways at the N end of the W (Wth 2m) and E (Wth 1.6m) walls is coeval with the fields. Two rectangular (dims 47m N-S; 17m E-W; D 1.4-1.8m: dims. 43m N-S; 16m E-W; D 1-2m) and one oval (dims 53m x 38m; D 1.5-3m) limestone quarries have two house sites (RO038-005009-; RO038-005010-) (int. dims 8m x 2m; 5m x 4m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 1-3m; H 0.1-0.3m) and small rectangular enclosures (dims c. 17m x 15m) associated with them.
