• RO023-180 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On the crest of a low E-W drumlin ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 37.2m E-W; 35m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.7-4.8m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.2-0.9m), which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.2m) NE-SSE, separated by a fosse (Wth of top 5.7-7.3m; Wth of base 2.6-4m; D 0.6-0.9m) from an earthen bank and hedge (Wth 3.8-6m; H 0.9-1.1m). There is an outer fosse (Wth of top 4.8-6.2m; Wth of base 3-4m; D 0.2-0.4m) NW-E-S which is expanded into ponds at E and S-W. There is an entrance through the inner (Wth 3.5m) and outer (Wth 4m) banks at SW, while an E-W field bank and townland boundary that bisected the site has been removed. • RO023-181001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On top of a low drumlin. Oval grass-covered area (dims 69m N-S; 42.4m E-W) defined by an earthen bank and hedge (Wth 3.6-4.2m; int. H 0.4-0.7m; ext. H 0.3m at W to 1.6m at N) with facing-stones visible at NNE, E and W (at W: original Wth 1.5m) and an outer fosse (Wth of top 5.2-6m; Wth of base 3.1-3.6m; D 0.4-0.5m). The stone-lined entrance (Wth 1.8m), now widened on the N side (Wth 5m), is at E, and 6m S of this the grass-covered foundations of a wall (Wth 1.4m; H 0.3m; L 4m), perhaps the remains of a house (RO023-181002-), run W from the inner face of the bank.   Description

  On a low ridge 6m outside the fosse of rath (RO023-181001-) at SW. Circular overgrown mound (diam. of base 6m E-W; 5.3m N-S; H 0.1-0.3m) separated by a berm (Wth 4.5-5.5m) from a double-faced wall (Wth 1m) SW-N which is reduced to a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 2.5-3m) elsewhere.   Description

  On a gentle SE-facing slope. Oval grass-covered area (dims 47.5m N-S; 38.3m E-W) defined by an earthen bank and hedge (Wth 3.5-4.4m; int. H 0.2-0.5m; ext. H 0.9-1.1m) with inner facing- stones at N, which is reduced to a scarp E-SE, and an outer fosse (Wth of top 5.5m; Wth of base 3m; D 0.2-0.5m) SE-W-E. The original entrance may have been at SE. There is a record of a cairn (RO023-182002-) with three stones protruding from it at the centre of the monument (Gannon 1972) which can no longer be seen. Rath (RO023-181001-) is c. 190m to the NW.   Description

  On the crest of the S-facing slope of a low E-W drumlin ridge at its W end. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 38.5m NE-SW; 37.2m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank with some bushes (Wth 4.3-4.4m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 0.7m at NE to 1.8m at SW) which is reduced to a scarp ENE-ESE where the entrance may have been, and an outer fosse (Wth of top 5.3m; Wth of base 2.3m; D 0.3m) NW-E-SE.   Description

  On a level low-lying landscape with the S-N Scramoge River c. 200m to the E. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 66m E-W; 60m N-S) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 5-5.8m; int. H 0.2m; ext. • RO023-217 Enclosure
  Description

  First identified in an unpublished archaeological LiDAR report (Davis, 2015) commissioned by Roscommon County Council as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the N5 Ballaghaderreen - Scramoge road development. It is located in mature meadow grass at the bottom of a slight S-facing slope. Although the LiDAR image (ibid. 189, 74, 2) depicts a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35-40m) defined by a bank feature that is overlain by an NW-SE field bank towards the perimeter at SW with mixed woodland beyond this feature, an antiquity cannot be confirmed by field inspection.
