• RO023-138001 Graveyard
  Description

  Probably the site of the parish church of Kilverdon (RO023-138002-), listed as Cloon in Bernan in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 when it was described as deserted (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223). Marked similarly on the 1837 and 1914 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a slight N-facing slope. Rectangular area (dims c. 40m E-W; c. 35m N-S) defined by masonry walls (Wth 0.5m; H 1m) with a gateway in the N wall. There is no evidence of a church, and the headstones are largely early 20th century in date. Archaeological testing (02E1518) c. 30-70m to the N failed to produce any related material (Read 2004a).   Description

• RO023-139 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 41.1m E-W; 36.9m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 3.6m at E to 6.2m at W; int. H 0.4-0.5m; ext. H 0.9-1.1m) and outer fosse (Wth of top 4.3-6.4m; Wth of base 1.9-3.3m; D 0.3-0.5m) W-E-S, but the perimeter is reduced to a scarp (H 1.1m) S-W. The entrance (Wth 1.5m) is at ESE.   Description

  Marked faintly as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a slight E-facing slope in a low-lying landscape.   Description

  On a gentle E-facing slope in a low-lying landscape. It is depicted as a subrectangular embanked enclosure on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map and a D-shaped hachured feature on the 191911 edition. This is a subrectangular grass and scrub-covered area (dims 26.9m N-S; 26.1m E-W) defined by earthen banks with some bushes (Wth 2.5-3.5m generally to 4.7m at W; int. H 0.2-0.5m generally to 1.1m at W; ext. H 0.3m at S to 0.9m at N). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. The earthwork (RO023-140----) is c. 190m to the SW.   Description

  Just off the crest of a low N-S ridge on the E-facing slope with a S-N section of the Scrammoge river c. 300m to the E and curving around W to c. 200m distant to the NE. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 37.1m N-S; 34.2m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 5-5.5m; int. H 0.3m generally to 1m at W; ext. H 0.9-1.2m) and a fosse (Wth of top 4-7.3m; Wth of base 2-3m; D 0.2-0.4m) ESE-W-ENE, but the bank is reduced to a scarp (H 1.3m) and the fosse is missing elsewhere.   Description

  On the crest of a low ridge overlooking a S-N section of the Scramoge River, c. 180m to the E. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 35.3m N-S; 33.9m E-W) defined by an earthen bank and hedge (Wth 3.9-4.2m; int. H 0.5-0.6m; ext. H 0.7-1m) with an outer fosse (Wth of top 4m; Wth of base 2.2-2.4m; D 0.5-0.9m). The bank is incorporated into a field bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.3m) and the fosse re-cut as a drain NE-ESE. There is a modern entrance (Wth 8m) at SW. Rath (RO023-185----) is c. 190m to the S. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  Just off the crest of a ridge, on a gentle E-facing slope overlooking a S-N section of the Scramoge River, c. 250m to the E. Circular overgrown area (diam. 40.4m N-S; 37m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 4.8-5.7m; int. H 0.6-1.1m; ext. H 1-1.7m) with inner facing-stones at the W, and a rounded outer fosse (Wth of top 5.8-9m; Wth of base 3-3.6m; D 0.2-0.5m) SW-N-NE which is re-cut as a drain NE-ESE. The entrance (Wth 3.5m) is at E.
