  Description

  On a level landscape. Circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 41m) with some beech trees and scrub defined by an earthen bank (Wth 6m; int. H 0.3-0.6m; ext. H 1.5-1.7m) S-SW and by a scarp (H 1-1.7m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or entrance. A curved depression (L 9m; Wth 4.5m; D 0.6-0.8m) inside the perimeter at W could be a collapsed souterrain (RO015-005002-) or a quarry.   Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 50m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on the NE-facing slope of a slight rise. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 33m) defined by a scarp (H 0.4-0.8m), with slight traces of a fosse (Wth of base 4m; D 0.2m) at SW.   On top of a low rise. A N-S depression (L 24m; Wth 2.5-3m; D 0.2-0.5m) is all that remains of an underground passage which was closed c. 1965 and was described locally as having four chambers (Gannon 1972).   On a level landscape. Rectangular grass-covered area (dims 70m WNW-ESE; 57m NNE-SSW) defined by gapped earthen banks (Wth 3-4.5m; int. H 0.2-0.65m; ext. H 1.45-1.8m) and flat-bottomed moats (Wth of base 3.7-4m; D 0.4-0.7m) on the W, N and E sides, and by a field bank at S. There is a short outer bank (Wth 3.2m; ext. • RO015-023 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Dungar was a centre of the MacDermot Gall, Lords of Airtech and descendents of Dermot Gall who was king of Moylurg (1315-6) (Mac Dermot 1996, 77-8), and probably from the beginning of the 14th century. They went into decline in the 16th century, and in 1565 Brian Mac Dermot of the Rock built or re-built a fort here for his son Rory with the consent of Mac Dermot Gall (ibid. 298-9, 449). The castle of Dungar was owned by Brian Mac Rory in 1641 (Simington 1949, 164) and was probably situated on the level landscape at the site of Frenchpark House. The French family were Galway merchants who began to acquire property at Dungar from the early 17th century. A house was built in 1667, according to dates on the later pediment of a brick house of seven bays and three storeys (Hayward 1955, 212). Wings of five bays by four and two storeys, connected to the main house by curving collenades were added c. 1729, probably to a design of Richard Castle who had also designed Strokestown House (RO023-172002-).   Description

  Detached circular-plan two-storey former smokehouse with remains of entrance porch to north, built c.1730, now derelict. Conical sandstone roof with central chimneystack, now overgrown. Roughcast rendered walls with red brick stepped eaves course. Red brick and stone string course to upper walls. Four segmental-headed openings to ground floor, some now blocked. Square-headed window openings to first floor with flagstones to centre. Segmental-headed entrance doorway with red brick surrounds. Brick-lined interior with full-height central flue with three hearths to ground. Flagstone floor with brick vaulted roof. Blind arches flank interior door. Interior walls having square-headed rectangular openings with a brick vaulted roof. Located to north of former walled garden of Frenchpark, now surrounded by farmland.

• Water pump, 1850–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c.1870, now disused. Hydrant comprises base with cylindrical fluted shaft and moulded neck with lion's head. Remains of cast-iron support for buckets. Set back from side of road, at crossroads, in a cobbled area.
