• RO023-169 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Towards the top of a steep N-facing slope at the W end of a WNW-ESE drumlin ridge. Subcircular grass and rush-covered area (dims 44.4m E-W; 38.6m N-S) which slopes down to the N (H of slope 2m) defined by an earthen bank and hedge (Wth 2-3.4m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.8m) which is reduced to a scarp (H 1.6m ) E-SSW. There are internal facing-stones at W, but there is no visible fosse. The modernised entrance (Wth 3m) is at ENE. • RO023-170 Standing stone
  Description

  Marked similarly on the 1837 and 1914 eds of the OS 6-inch map and described as a standing stone on both. It is situated in a low-lying position with higher ridges to the E, S and W. • RO023-195001 Church
  Description

  Known locally as the site of an early monastery, and listed as such (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 366). The name derives from Ceall Lallóg, Lallóg being reputedly a daughter of St Patrick’s sister – Dairearca (Ó Riain 2011, 390) and the cill was known as ‘Seanlois’. Situated on the S-facing crest of an E-W ridge. There is no evidence of a church, but a wall foundation (Wth 1.9m; H 0.2-0.5m; L 6.5m E-W) which may be part of a burial ground (RO023-195002-) partly overlies the perimeter of the ecclesiastical enclosure (RO023-195003-) at NE. The enclosure is an oval grass-covered area (dims 80m E-W; 65m N-S) defined by an eroded earthen bank (at N: Wth 9.3m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.5m) and outer fosse (at N: Wth of top 6.8m; Wth of base 2.6m; ext. D 0.2m) WNW-ENE, and by a low scarp (H 0.6-0.9m) elsewhere. There is no identifiable original entrance and the perimeter is truncated slightly by a N-S road at E. There is an enclosure (RO023-195004-) inside the perimeter at E, visible as a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 21m E-W; 18m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.4m). There is another enclosure (RO023-190005-) visible as a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 28m N-S; 17m E-W) defined by scarps (H 0.3m) S-W-N, which is truncated by a N-S road bank at E, immediately outside the perimeter at SE.   Description

  Situated on the S-facing crest of an E-W ridge and at the site of an early church (RO023-195001-). Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 366) declare that there is a burial ground here, but unless it is the wall against the perimeter of ecclesiastical enclosure (RO023-195003-) at E, there is no evidence of one.   Description

  Situated on the S-facing slope of an E-W ridge, and immediately outside the perimeter of the ecclesiastical enclosure (RO023-195003-) at SE. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims c. 60m NE-SW; c. 25m NW-SE) defined by scarps (H 0.3m) NE-S-SW, which is cut by an E-W field bank and also by a N-S road, but the perimeter is best preserved W of the road to the edge of the ecclesiastical enclosure. • RO023-212 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  At the N edge of a plateau. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 34.7m E-W; 34m N-S) defined by a slight scarp (H 0.2-0.3m) NE-SW with slight traces of a bank (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.1m) and outer fosse (Wth c. 4m) at S. It is truncated by an E-W field bank, now removed, at N and a N-S field bank, also removed, at W. Archaeological testing (01E0564) c. 95m to the E failed to produce any related material (Read 2003e). Rath (RO023-171001-) is c. 120m to the ESE. • RO023-218 Linear earthwork
  Description

  First identified in an unpublished archaeological LiDAR report (Davis, 2015) commissioned by Roscommon County Council as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the N5 Ballaghaderreen - Scramoge road development. It is located on a fairly level landscape. A linear feature (L c. 400m) runs sinuously in a NW-SE direction through five fields. It is manifest towards the NW end as a low, grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 8m; H at SW 0.3m; H at NE 0.2m) with a slight fosse or drain (Wth of top 4.15m; ext. D 0.3m) on the NE side. This morphs into a linear hollow (Wth of top 8.2m; Wth of base 3.25m; D 0.3m) as it progresses SE but narrows towards that end. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 8 August, 2016
